Man United have given Michael Carrick another chance, but the argument over who could replace him is showing no sign of going away.

Carrick will lead United into Saturday's trip to Chelsea after surviving discussions over his future following the dreadful 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth.

United are 16th in the Premier League, just a point clear of the bottom three, and have failed to win any of their last eight matches across all competitions.

Sky Sports reported this week that Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada had already considered alternatives before allowing Carrick to carry on, while Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann remain among the names under consideration.

Thursday brought another show of defiance from Carrick, who insisted he needed no guarantees about his position and confirmed Bruno Fernandes would remain captain.

Fernandes questioned United's tactics after the Como defeat before being dropped against Bournemouth.

Sorting that relationship out matters immediately, as United need their manager and captain pulling together when there is so little breathing room at the table.

As for the potential replacements, Fabrizio Romano has put Howe ahead of Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte among the available candidates, and he has also reported conversations between United and representatives of other managers.

That still leaves a sizeable gap between checking options and actually choosing someone.

Howe knows the Premier League, Nagelsmann has coached Bayern Munich and Germany, while Conte brings experience of winning major titles.

However, the uncertainty over the position appears to run deeper than simply picking the most convenient available name.

Ex-Arsenal and Chelsea star Cesc Fàbregas has admirers inside Old Trafford, with The Telegraph's Luke Edwards revealing that some believe United should throw more weight behind trying to land the Como manager.

Aston Villa's Unai Emery also features among the alternative options.

Howe is believed to be Wilcox's pick, while others have different ideas about the manager they would trust to take on the challenge at Old Trafford.

Support is split between several options, and Edwards reports that uncertainty over the next appointment partly explains why Carrick was spared this week.

Fabregas would certainly be a bold call for United.

United hardly need reminding what his Como side can do after being beaten 4-1 in Italy last week, and Fabregas has already helped take Como into the Champions League, with last season's fourth-place finish underlining the progress made during his time in charge.

This is a coach seriously building his reputation through proven results, which explains why his name would appeal during another difficult spell at Old Trafford.

United would still have to persuade him that leaving Como makes sense for his career.

Before the clubs met, Fabregas batted away questions about succeeding Carrick, arguing that discussing the job while his fellow manager remained in charge would be disrespectful.

His work in Italy offers plenty of reasons to be patient, especially when United keep showing how quickly a promising start can turn sour.
