15 Most Skilful English Players in Football History [Ranked]

A passionate supporter of Nottingham Forest, Louis Wheeldon has been writing about football for the last four-and-a-half years of his life. Having recently completed a degree in Football Journalism at the University of Derby, Louis joined GMS in May 2024, having previously worked for VAVEL, Reach PLC and Nottingham Forest. Primarily a Premier League writer, Louis has a knowledge and interest in clubs in and outside "the 92" that is as proud as it is mildly concerning, having first channeled this keen footballing interest into a hopeful career in sports writing in 2019. His interests do not end in football, however, as Louis is a keen fan of pro wrestling, MMA, boxing, darts and Formula 1.

15 Jadon Sancho

Clubs: Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa

Jadon Sancho in Action for Aston Villa vs Brentford

Whilst a transfer to Manchester United may not have spelled out great fortune for Jadon Sancho, there is little denying that he is one of the more well-known players for tricks and flair to have come from England. The South-London born winger made his name at the Watford and Manchester City academies, before being picked up in 2017 by Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho turned out over 100 times for the German side, and quickly outed himself as one of the trickiest, most eye-catching wingers in the world. Loan spells at Chelsea and Aston Villa later brought Conference League and Europa League winners' medals, and his appearance in Villa's 2026 final made him the first player to feature in three consecutive European finals for three different clubs in three different competitions.

Though his performances for Manchester United and bad luck in the Premier League hold him down in this list, he is more than deserving of a spot on it regardless, due to his initial rise.

14 Peter Beardsley

Clubs: Carlisle United, Vancouver Whitecaps, Newcastle United, Liverpool, Everton, Bolton Wanderers, Fulham, Hartlepool United

Peter Beardsley

Small, deceptive and endlessly inventive, Peter Beardsley is regarded as England's first recognised number 10. Turned away after trials at Gillingham, Burnley and Cambridge United, he became the subject of a British record £1.9 million fee when Kenny Dalglish brought him to Liverpool in 1987, forming a devastating front line alongside John Barnes and John Aldridge that won two league titles and the FA Cup.

His close control and feints made him a favourite wherever he went, from two spells at Newcastle, the second as one of Kevin Keegan's Entertainers, to Everton, where he became one of only two players to score for both sides in the Merseyside derby. For England, he won 59 caps and proved Gary Lineker's ideal foil across two World Cups.

Michael Owen celebrates scoring for Liverpool.

Though known today for his questionable punditry takes, Michael Owen's ridiculous ability at the peak of his powers should never be forgotten.

Known for his clinical goalscoring and intense pace, Owen's small stature and quick feet had him outed as one of the most technically gifted and trickiest forwards in English history, with his exploits seeing him join up with Los Blancos in 2004 for a year. It's little surprise, then, that the Chester-born forward received the coveted Ballon d'Or in 2001; the last Englishman to win the award to date.

One of the most stylish and world-known footballers to have ever graced the sport, David Beckham was one of the most technically gifted footballers to have partaken in the sport.

Whilst many know him for his world-famous set-piece and crossing abilities, brandished by the term "Bend it like Beckham", his ability with the ball at his feet is something that should not slip down in terms of how it is recognised. As a counter-point to his explosive Manchester United winger partner Ryan Giggs, Beckham's strength lay in his passing and movement to beat his opponents, with a wide-range of sharp skills that allowed him to perform to his creative best.

11 Cole Palmer

Few English players have made the difficult look as effortless as Cole Palmer. Nicknamed 'Cold Palmer' for his composure, the Wythenshawe-born playmaker came through Manchester City's academy and was part of their 2022/23 treble-winning squad before a £40 million move to Chelsea unlocked his talent.

His debut season at Stamford Bridge brought 22 Premier League goals, 11 assists and the PFA Young Player of the Year award, and he followed it by becoming the first player in Premier League history to score four times in a single first half, against Brighton in 2024. Palmer saves his best for the biggest occasions, too: he struck England's equaliser from outside the box in the Euro 2024 final, then scored twice and assisted once as Chelsea beat PSG 3-0 in the 2025 Club World Cup final, collecting the tournament's Golden Ball.

10 Jack Wilshere

Clubs: Arsenal, Bolton Wanderers, AFC Bournemouth, West Ham United, AGF

Jack Wilshere

Arsène Wenger once described Jack Wilshere as a player blessed with Spanish technique and an English heart, and at his peak few English midfielders could glide through a crowded centre circle quite like him. Arsenal's youngest-ever league debutant at 16 years and 256 days, he won the PFA Young Player of the Year award for 2010/11.

His signature moment came against Norwich in 2013, a slick sequence of one-touch passing finished off by Wilshere himself, which was voted Goal of the Season. He won the award again the following year, the first player to do so in back-to-back seasons in the Premier League era. Injuries ultimately robbed him of a career at the very top, but 34 England caps and two FA Cups hint at what might have been.

One of the earliest 'Galactico' signings, Steve McManaman was a fiercely talented operator. A two-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, McManaman's dazzling footwork and deep box of tricks carved him out as one of the finer wingers in Europe, with the ability to glide past defenders with ease, coupled with a keen eye for a pass.

After a glittering 566-appearance career for three top clubs, McManaman brought the curtain down on his playing days in 2005.

Remembered first for the goals, Sir Bobby Charlton was also among the most gifted ball-carriers England has ever produced. Starting out as a quick, agile outside-left, he grew into an attacking midfielder capable of running long distances with the ball under control before unleashing a ferocious shot with either foot.

A survivor of the 1958 Munich air disaster, Charlton went on to make 758 appearances and score 249 goals for Manchester United, captaining them to European Cup glory in 1968 with two goals in the final against Benfica. Two years earlier, he had been central to England's World Cup triumph and won the Ballon d'Or. His 106 caps and 49 goals stood as national records for years, and remarkably, he was booked only twice in his entire career.

7 Stanley Matthews

Clubs: Stoke City, Blackpool, Toronto City

Stanley Matthews

The first ever winner of the Ballon d'Or, Stanley Matthews possessed an air of grace, poise and skill that far belied the generation in which he played in.

Franz Beckenbauer once stated that Matthews possessed such speed and skill that "almost no-one in the game could stop him". Johnny Giles claimed that he had everything – "good close control, great dribbling ability. He was lightning quick. He was also an intelligent player, who knew how to pass the ball". Those who witnessed him and his revolutionary training methods and style of play all remarked Matthews as one of the silkiest of all time. A hero of yesteryear, whose mark on the English game stands forever more.

Nicknamed 'Magic Chris', the former Spurs and Marseille talisman was widely regarded as one of the finest, silkiest attacking midfielders in all of Europe.

With 62 caps for England, and at one point being made the third-most expensive player in the world following his French switch from Tottenham, Waddle was gifted from the off with his outstanding skillset and creative abilities. Born through a deep-bred love for the game, Waddle took to every game with a unique flair and air of confidence, even when he turned out for non-league Hallam FC in his fifties.
