The New York Giants lost quarterback J.J. McCarthy to an apparent injury in the third quarter of his second start with the team.
McCarthy's injury occurred when he was scrambling to his left on a designed quarterback run. The 23-year-old quarterback was hit hard in the midsection by Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Zack Baun at the end of his run, and he remained on the ground in pain following the play.
McCarthy was able to get to the sideline but appeared to be in a lot of pain. He was captured by the broadcast trying to throw passes, but he collapsed to the ground and grabbed at his right side after attempting a throw.
He was then taken into the blue medical tent for further evaluation following his brief throwing session. He was then seen jogging to the locker room, with athletic training staff in tow for the team.
Here's what to know about McCarthy's injury.
The Giants did not immediately provide an update about McCarthy's status after he exited the game.
McCarthy completed 9 of 13 passes for 101 yards and added 11 yards on three carries before being injured.
Jameis Winston is the Giants' backup quarterback. He opened the year as the backup to Jaxson Dart and made four starts before ceding the starting role to McCarthy in Week 7.
Winston posted a 2-1-1 record while completing 57% of his passes for 957 yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions.
The Giants have just two quarterbacks on their game-day roster, so Winston will be the last line of defense against the Eagles. Below is a look at New York's quarterback depth chart with Dart out for the season because of a knee injury.

Jake Haener (practice squad)
Haener, a 2024 fourth-round pick by the New Orleans Saints, has made one career start. It came during his rookie season, and he completed 18 of 39 passes for 226 yards, one touchdown and one interception across eight appearances.
