‘No drama, no panic’ for Sunderland and Le Bris

Regis Le Bris insisted there was "no drama, no panic" in the Sunderland dressing room despite a goalless draw with Leeds United leaving them bottom of the Premier League.

Sunderland remain rooted to the bottom of the top-flight table following a tepid affair at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, with the weather conditions not helping either side.

Brian Brobbey, making his return from a hamstring injury, had Sunderland's best chances in the first half, but he was denied both times by Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford.

Nilson Angulo twice tested Trafford in the second half, but Leeds almost won it in stoppage time, with former Newcastle United man Sean Longstaff twice going close.

Sunderland have nine points fewer than they did at the same stage of last season's Premier League (five in 2026-27, 14 in 2025-26), the biggest drop-off after eight games of any team, though they are also competing in Europe this term.

The Black Cats drew with Lech Poznan in the Europa League on Thursday, making it seven points from their opening three games.

"This is what we want to be," Le Bris told Sky Sports when asked about the difficulty of managing in different competitions.

"We want to play in Europe as regularly as possible, so facing this challenge is new for us, and you need to learn, you need to create something new and it takes time.

"No drama, no panic and we are in the situation we expected ourselves to be. Obviously, it's still difficult to lose games, but we think we are in the right direction.

"It's a positive [point]. The more positive [thing] is the way we played with intensity, togetherness. It's still a long journey.

"We know with this busy schedule playing in Europe, playing in the Carabao Cup, it's a new challenge for us and we need to embrace it.

"I think we showed that we are in this challenge, we want to embrace it and be ourselves, and we probably deserved a bit more today."

The conditions made for an underwhelming contest, with Sunderland registering an expected goals (xG) total of 0.91 from their 15 attempts to Leeds' 0.57 from their 11 shots.

Storm Boelo has battered much of the United Kingdom over the weekend, and neither team could really gain a foothold as the high winds made it difficult.

Leeds have now played out the joint-most draws of any team in the Premier League in 2026 (14 – level with Brentford), while their five nil-nil draws are the outright most this year.

Daniel Farke's side are seventh in the Premier League and four points behind Liverpool in fourth, with the Leeds boss highlighting how difficult the conditions were to play in.

"The conditions played a big part. It is fair to say that it wasn't a nice piece of football, but it's difficult in these conditions when you don't know the curve of the ball," Farke said.

"It is easy to play proper football on a nice Sunday, when the sun is shining, but these types of games are important, and you have to adapt and accept the conditions.

"You have to adapt to the fight, there are lots of fights for second ball and long balls, and you have to show lots of skill and we did this today.

"A clean sheet is always a good outcome for us. In possession, you could see a bit that we had a difficult training week when key players in offence were absent.

"I need to give praise to my lads, we have a different game. We have created a very honest team and we have to adapt. I like another clean sheet and how we looked defensively.

"It is never easy for a team, but we handled this occasion really well. On a good day we can be better."
