Fleetwood Town goalkeeper Jay Lynch says Arsenal's defeated stars didn't take losing to the League Two minnows well in their Carabao Cup upset on Tuesday night.

The Fishermen defeated the Gunners on penalties, scoring all five of their spot kicks while Bruno Guimaraes saw his effort saved in the decisive blow for Mikel Arteta's side.

Lynch was the hero in the shootout, palming away the Brazilian's penalty to give Fleetwood the advantage, with Conor Haughey then stepping up to secure the 5-3 victory.

There were chaotic scenes after the winning penalty, with fans flooding onto the pitch to celebrate a historic win for the Cod Army, and Lynch has revealed Arsenal stars didn't speak with Fleetwood players after the defeat.

Appearing on talkSPORT, Lynch said: "It’s obviously such a huge moment for us and all the fans ran on, no one actually got chance to speak to them.

"I think the gaffer spoke to their gaffer briefly, but because of all the fans we didn’t actually get a chance to ask for shirts or even speak to them or anything, to be honest. They didn’t take it well, let’s put it that way."

Fleetwood, who are currently 18th in League Two, sprung an early surprise when Fulham loanee Aaron Loupalo-Bi fired them ahead after 21 minutes, against a heavily-rotated Arsenal side that struggled to establish any rhythm on the Fylde coast.

The introduction of Martin Odegaard swung the balance of the tie in the Gunners favour and they appeared considerably sharper after the restart, restoring parity in the 50th minute when Viktor Gyokeres just about managed to convert his opening goal of the campaign.

However, as Arsenal increased the pressure without finding a breakthrough, their exasperation reached boiling point as their teenage sensation Max Dowman received his marching orders with five minutes remaining.

The Gunners have since appealed the decision that saw Dowman kick out towards Harrison Neal after a robust challenge, with Mikel Arteta appearing to berate the youngster as he made his way off the pitch.

There remained opportunity for Lynch to produce vital stops from Ben White and Odegaard before proceedings moved to a penalty shootout in which Fleetwood executed flawlessly from 12 yards to claim a memorable victory.
