'I've never seen anything like the Eala effect' - Alex Eala’s staggering impact explained by trio of WTA Tour event directors

Three WTA Tour event directors have spoken fondly of the Alex ‘Eala effect,’ with North American tournaments witnessing a dramatic rise in first-time attendees.

The Filipina superstar has ignited a WTA Tour fire in 2026, with fans flocking from all across the globe to witness Eala live.

In Toronto, tournament director Karl Hale saw an event record of over 215,000 fans, describing the 21-year-old’s impact as “incredible… The Eala effect was unprecedented.”

Hale appeared on The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast to reveal attendance figures from this year’s Canadian Open, where the 21-year-old lost in the round of 16 to Belinda Bencic.

With over 215,000 fans attending, the most-ever in Canadian Open history, Hale explained that the figures were “essentially the same as the men last year.”

During the Tour’s hardcourt swing, directors in the States, as relayed by Tennis World, expressed similar sentiments regarding Eala’s popularity, and observed similar increases in attendance figures.

Washington tournament director Mark Ein, who oversaw the event in which Eala won her first Tour-level title, described how attendance was heavily influenced by the Filipina’s schedule.

Speaking during Eala’s crowning ceremony, Ein said: “A few weeks before the event, our ticketing team called me and said that virtually all of the requests about players this year were about Alex.

“Boy, was it great to have you and your following at our tournament. You are growing right here before all of our eyes, and I know you can’t be stopped.”

Elsewhere, in Cincinnati, tournament director Bob Moran explained that Eala’s impact was almost unprecedented, revealing that fans would flock to gates before the 21-year-old’s matches to locate ideal stand placement in the States.

“At 8pm, the line [on Court Three] was already formed of Eala fans at the front gate. We didn’t open until 9:30 pm, so they sat out there for 90 minutes, just waiting,” explained Moran.

“As soon as those gates opened, there was a stream of fans to Court Three to get the best seats possible. I haven’t seen anything like this. I really haven’t."

In a separate interview, Hale described how the Canadian Open made changes to ensure first-time attendees, who arrived in record volume, felt welcomed, namely Filipino fans in support of Eala.

“The Eala effect was unprecedented. She sold out, basically, four sessions,” explained the director, who introduced Filipino food choices, and played music from the Philippines during the changeovers, to cater for Toronto’s newfound audience.

"We reached a new audience of tennis fans," Hale explained, attributing much of the rise in first-time visitors to Eala’s presence.

The Filipina has enjoyed a breakout WTA season in 2026, claiming her first Tour-level singles title in Washington against world No. 4 Jessica Pegula back in August.

In her subsequent event, Eala’s presence in Canada helped organisers to attract thousands of new attendees, with the 21-year-old ‘selling out, basically, four sessions.’

The Canadian Open director continued: “Sold out crowds. Eala was incredible,” before acknowledging the rise in WTA Tour popularity in recent times.

“Our tournament was the most successful, I’ve never seen anything like it. Just huge numbers,” continued the director, whose tournament also witnessed its most-ever first-time attendees.

Hale also revealed that tickets to Eala’s opening match sold out within 30 minutes of her schedule being announced, thwarting plans at the Canadian Open to put her on a smaller court.

The Filipina star, who exited the Pan Pacific Open to world No. 13 Diana Schnaider this Friday morning, will gear up for an even stronger 2027, as tournament directors prepare for the ‘Eala effect’ once more.
