Joao Fonseca has officially called a halt to his 2026 season, he announced on Saturday.
Fonseca will miss his title defence at the Basel Open, as well as the Paris Masters, due to injury. The 20-year-old Brazilian took to social media to say: “Hey everyone, just dropping by to update you on the rest of the season. As you saw, I skipped the Asian swing to focus on my recovery.
“My plan was to return during the European swing. But after talking with my team, I realised I’m still not 100% ready to compete at the level I’d like. And there is no need to rush things. So, we decided to prioritise my health and put all focus on the 2027 season. Thank you so much for the support and love always. See you all on the court soon.”
Fonseca, currently ranked 29th in the world, will drop 550 ATP points by missing the Basel Open and the Paris Masters. The docked points will see him end the year ranked outside the top 40.
Being outside the top 32, Fonseca will not be seeded at the 2027 Australian Open, meaning he will come up against top opponents early on in the draw of the hard-court major. He will be making his third appearance at Melbourne Park, having lost in the second round there in 2025 and the first round this year.
Take your pick…
Following his breakthrough year in 2025, Fonseca has endured an up-and-down season in 2026 amid injury struggles. He has not added to his title collection, but has enjoyed some strong results at big tournaments, particularly Roland Garros.
Fonseca reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career at the French Open and beat Novak Djokovic en route. He came back from two sets down to defeat Djokovic in a thrilling five-set clash.
Fonseca then went on to beat Casper Ruud before ultimately being knocked out of Roland Garros by Jakub Mensik. The young star also reached his first ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Though Fonseca will be at a disadvantage at the Australian Open, he can quickly rise back up the rankings as he does not have many points to defend at the top of the year. Before the Sunshine Double kicks off in Indian Wells, Fonseca is only set to protect 60 points.
That’s because he started off 2026 by losing in the first round of the Australian Open and the Argentina Open before falling in the second round of the Rio Open. A lengthy run at the Australian Open will see him enter the top 30 once again.
Across Indian Wells and Miami, Fonseca is defending 130 points, having made the fourth round and second round at those two tournaments in 2026, respectively.
