Heys came into this one looking for a fifth straight win in all competitions having beaten Euxton Villa 1-0 in the league in midweek.
Chadderton were looking to add to a 3-1 win in the league against Litherland last time out.
In a cagey start there was an early setback for Heys on seven minutes after a shot from Lewis Ayres was cleared.
In a busy penalty area, striker Louis Holt went down injured.
After receiving treatment, he left the field of play to be replaced by Ellis Richardson.
It was later established though he was taken off as a precaution.
The visitors remained focused though and on twenty minutes great work from winger Takura Sambizi on the left found Appleton, twenty yards out, but he fired his shot over the bar.
Shortly after, sub Richardson chased in on goal, after a through ball, but the flag was up for offside.
Heys were pressing forward.
Louie Hutchinson, on the right, launched a twenty-yard free kick into the box but the Heys front line could not connect.
In a busy spell in the game, mid half, Chadderton's first chance came on the half hour mark.
Jordan Lazenbury, from the left, fired at Prestwich keeper Jack Buckley from eight yards.
Heys pressure told though on thirty-three minutes when a shot from Appleton deflected off a Chadderton defender and over keeper Ollie Culkin into the net to put the visitors into a deserved lead.
Prestwich bossed the remainder of the half in midfield, but the last chance went to Chadderton with Lazenbury, on the left, hitting the side netting from eight yards.
So, Heys went into the half time break a goal up, and Chadderton knowing they would need to create a lot more after the interval if they were going to turn this around.
The second half started in a similar vein as the first with both teams battling in the midfield.
Sambizi, on the hour, beat his man down the left, but saw his deflected shot go wide of the near post.
Shortly after, he put another cross in, but it went behind striker Richardson who was looking to connect.
It was another one of those crosses from the left that did count on seventy-eight minutes.
Sambizi knocked in the cross to Appleton, six yards out, who capped off a perfect afternoon for himself, slotting the ball past Culkin to put Heys two up and in complete control, to the joy of the travelling Heys support.
Heys continued to press and ten minutes later Liam Cuthbert drove through the middle, but Culkin was on hand to save.
Referee James Barker signalled four minutes of injury time giving the hosts time for one late chance when a ball delivered deep into the box was palmed away by keeper Buckley for the final action of the day.
So, it’s now five wins in a row for Heys and this a third straight victory in the league.
This was the most impressive ninety-minute display of the season thus far, from a side who after scoring the first goal never really looked in any danger against a Chadderton team who started the day in fourth place in the league table.
Confidence is high within this Heys side, and they will look to continue their progress next Saturday when they take on New Mills in the Macron Cup 2nd Round at Adie Moran Park (3pm), before hosting Trafford in the league next Tuesday, October 27, in the league (7.45pm).
