Bukayo Saka has been told he should be worried about his place in England’s team after Rio Ngumoha’s latest starring role for Liverpool.
The 18-year-old was the standout performer as he inspired the Reds to a comeback victory over Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday. Ngumoha grabbed two assists as Liverpool made it three wins out of three in this season’s competition.
It wasn’t just his goal contributions which caught the eye though, with the teenager praised for his performance while the rest of his teammates were lambasted for a poor first-half showing, which saw the Reds fall 2-0 down before eventually recording a 4-3 victory.
Ngumoha deservedly took home the player of the match award for his performance, and now he is being backed to take the international stage by storm.
The winger has already put himself in contention with England, having earned a call-up for Thomas Tuchel’s training squad ahead of the World Cup before making his competitive debut during the most recent international break, and with the next Euros less than two years away now, former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy thinks he can’t be ignored.
"After that performance, you have to be seriously looking at him. He was involved in the last squad,” Cundy told talkSPORT.
"He has caught the eye. Every time he plays, he catches the eye. And there are very few players that can do that at his age. But the thing that he's got, he has the ability because he's so young.
"There's no fear of failure. You get this with young players. They don't know what it's like. Failure doesn't exist in their lives. They've always been the best.
"They just go out and just go and showcase what you've got. Go on, do a step over. Who cares if I get it? And more often than not, because he's so full of confidence…
Get Liverpool's new 2026/27 home kit
Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.
"There will be a moment in his career where there will be a dip, he will drop in form. It inevitably happens with most young kids but wow, what a performance, what a player."
Ngumoha’s rise could be bad news for Saka. With the teenager now finding his feet on the right-hand side for Liverpool, he could find himself in direct competition with the Arsenal star for his country.
At the moment, Saka is England’s first-choice on the right, but Cundy believes his place could come under threat.
"Saka's had a lot of injuries, but he's England's starter right now in England's best team,” Cundy said.
"But, when you're watching young players come through, and even though Saka's still got to reach the peak of his powers...
"When you're looking over your shoulder, you're going, 'Wow, this kid has got something'. Liverpool fans should be very excited, England fans should be very excited.
“If I’m Saka, I’ve got to keep up my standards, because if I don’t, I’ve got him breathing down my neck.”
