There aren't many people with a clearer perspective on the New Orleans Saints than Drew Brees. The Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback has been in the FOX Sports broadcast booth for each of the Saints' last two games, so he's had a great seat to watch what's worked and what hasn't. After the Saints tied things up against the New York Giants just before halftime, 10-10, Brees shared his take on the state of things.
"Here's the thing, I still haven't seen the Saints put together a good drive yet," Brees said, pointing out how a special teams turnover created their lone touchdown-scoring drive in the first half. So what is he looking for in the second half? "I want to see tempo, I want to see play action, I want to see them taking shots, I want to see them being more aggressive. I think it's been way too conservative up to this point. They've been in seven third and longs, no first or second down efficiency. They need to get back a level of confidence that you can see and feel, and urgency, and I just (haven't seen) that happen."
We've seen the offense get whittled down week by week, losing starters to injuries like left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. (ankle) and running back Travis Etienne Jr. (hamstring). Second-year quarterback Tyler Shough is gutting it out with two broken bones in his off hand. And their confidence has gone with them. Hopefully an impressive Alvin Kamara touchdown in the second half sparks some of that urgency Brees is looking for.
