Frances Tiafoe will get his European indoor hard-court swing underway at the Vienna Open tomorrow as he continues his push for an ATP Finals debut.
The American currently occupies the seventh of eight spots in the race to Turin, where the year-end tournament is held. Tiafoe holds a live points tally of 3,380 after an impressive string of results in North America, where he made the final of the Cincinnati Open and the semifinals of the US Open.
Ahead of his appearance in Vienna, Tiafoe revealed he is determined to qualify for the ATP Finals for the first time in his career.
Asked in an interview with Tennis TV if he feels better at this point in the season compared to previous years, Tiafoe replied: “Yes and no. Obviously, I feel much better mentally than I have in other seasons, but it’s still a hard and gruelling season.
“I think, you know, if you win a lot, your body goes through a lot. So it is the most taxing season I’ve ever had. But also I’m more excited to play at the end of the year than I have in past years. Mentally, I feel better. Obviously, I’m competing for something and trying to reach new heights, and yeah, I just feel good.”
As it stands, Tiafoe is set to become one of four debutants at the ATP Finals, along with Flavio Cobolli, Arthur Fils and Rafael Jodar. “Shout out to those guys, but I’m not really a guy who cares about the field,” said Tiafoe.
“I loved that there are new faces at the top, but, you know, I am super focused on what I’m doing, and that’s what I want to do. I want to be amongst the best eight in the world at arguably our pinnacle sport event, and now we’re competing for it.”
The Vienna Open featured a stacked field, and Tiafoe’s first-round assignment is certainly representative of that. The 28-year-old will take on Lorenzo Musetti in his opening matchup of the competition, with the Italian in improved form.
Musetti just won his first title in four years at the Lyon Open and will head to the Vienna Open high on confidence. Should Tiafoe advance through the early rounds, he will still have a tough time making it to the final, as he is in the same half of the draw as top seed Alexander Zverev.
Zverev is looking to finally clinch world number one status at the Vienna Open and needs just two wins to rise above Jannik Sinner in the rankings.
