3 players KKR can release ahead of IPL 2027 mini-auction

Kolkata Knight Riders could make some significant changes to their squad ahead of IPL 2027 auction.

Some of these decisions could be driven by underwhelming performances, while others might simply be a result of financial planning.

Preparations for the IPL 2027 mini-auction, scheduled to take place in Goa, are gathering momentum. With franchises required to submit their retention and release lists by November 17, teams have started evaluating their existing combinations and identifying areas that need attention. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are among the franchises that could make some significant changes to their squad.

Working within the ₹120 crore salary cap while maintaining a balanced 25-member squad presents a considerable challenge. KKR have made some expensive acquisitions in recent auctions, and the management could consider parting ways with a few players to create additional financial flexibility and address weaknesses in the squad.

Some of these decisions could be driven by underwhelming performances, while others might simply be a result of financial planning and changing team requirements. Let’s take a look at some players KKR could potentially release before the IPL 2027 mini-auction.

3 players KKR can release ahead of IPL 2027 auction

1. Cameron Green (₹25.20 Crore)

Reason: Creating more room in the auction purse

Cameron Green was one of the biggest talking points of the previous auction after KKR secured his services for a staggering ₹25.20 crore. The Australian all-rounder had a reasonably productive IPL 2026 campaign, scoring 322 runs and claiming seven wickets in 14 appearances.

Despite delivering useful contributions with both bat and ball, his enormous price tag could force KKR to reconsider their investment. Having such a significant portion of the salary cap committed to one player can restrict a franchise’s ability to strengthen other departments.

Possible strategy: Release and attempt to buy him back

One option available to KKR could be releasing Green before the deadline and entering the auction with the possibility of acquiring him again at a more manageable price.

If his auction value drops, the Knight Riders could potentially bring him back for a lower amount, possibly in the ₹14-16 crore range. Such a move would help them retain his all-round abilities while creating additional funds to address other squad requirements.

However, there is always a risk that another franchise could enter the bidding and secure his services. KKR would therefore need to carefully assess whether the potential financial benefit outweighs the possibility of losing an important overseas player.

2. Matheesha Pathirana (₹18 Crore)

Reason: Injury concerns and limited contribution

Matheesha Pathirana arrived at KKR with considerable expectations after the franchise invested ₹18 crore to bring the Sri Lankan fast bowler into its setup. Known for his unusual bowling action, impressive pace and effectiveness at the death, Pathirana was expected to become a key part of their bowling attack.

Unfortunately, his IPL 2026 campaign turned into a major disappointment. A serious hamstring injury restricted his participation, and he managed to bowl only 1.2 overs in a solitary appearance throughout the tournament. For a franchise that invested such a substantial amount in him, the return was far from satisfactory.

Possible strategy: Find a more reliable overseas pacer

KKR could decide that retaining Pathirana for another season involves too much uncertainty, particularly considering the amount of money involved.

Although his ability to deliver yorkers and trouble batters during the closing overs makes him an attractive option, availability remains equally important. KKR cannot afford to have a major portion of their purse tied up in an overseas fast bowler whose fitness is uncertain.

Releasing him would also open up a valuable overseas position, allowing the management to explore other international bowling options who could offer greater availability and consistency throughout the tournament.

3. Rahul Tripathi

Reason: Limited opportunities and increasing competition

Rahul Tripathi could be another player who finds himself on KKR’s release list ahead of the upcoming mini-auction. The experienced Indian batter joined the franchise for ₹75 lakh at the IPL 2026 mini-auction. Unlike Green and Pathirana, Tripathi does not represent a significant financial commitment. However, his limited involvement in the previous season could make his retention difficult to justify.

The right-handed batter did not feature in a single match during IPL 2026, suggesting that he was not a regular part of the team’s preferred playing combination. With competition for batting positions increasing, KKR might prefer to explore alternatives.

Possible strategy: Make space for younger Indian batters

KKR have several promising domestic batting options emerging within their setup. Angkrish Raghuvanshi, in particular, enjoyed an impressive IPL 2026 season, accumulating 422 runs and strengthening his position in the team’s batting plans. With younger players making their presence felt, the franchise could look to restructure its Indian batting department rather than continue carrying experienced players who are unlikely to receive regular opportunities.

Releasing Tripathi would not necessarily create substantial financial savings, but it would free up a domestic squad position. KKR could use that opportunity to target an aggressive Indian opener, a specialist finisher or another batter who better suits their requirements for IPL 2027.
