Andoni Iraola believes Liverpool will be without Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong for “some time” after injuries during Saturday’s 2-1 win at Brentford.
Szoboszlai was forced off 32 minutes into the first half at the Gtech, while half-time substitute Frimpong only lasted seven minutes before dropping to the turf.
It leaves Liverpool without their most-used player, along with two options at right-back, with Iraola suggesting both players could be facing lengthy spells out.
“Dom felt the same injury, not a new injury,” he told reporters in his post-match press conference.
“It was probably not healed enough, so we need more time with him.
“Jeremie was new, I think he finished cramping the other day but I put him [on] because playing against 10, obviously going forward I thought he could give us more than Ronald.
“But it means that we will lose Dom and Jeremie for some time, yes.”
There is clearly a question over why Szoboszlai was brought straight back into the starting lineup after a hamstring problem – not least as he then aggravated that same injury.
However, with Ryan Gravenberch suspended and a tight turnaround following Wednesday’s 6-3 win away to LASK, the head coach believes his hands were tied.
“We have a very delicate situation,” he explained.
“We arrived late [back from Austria], probably not the proper recovery, so you’re in doubt between the players who have already started two games and are very tired or the players who are recovering from injuries.
“You’re not 100 percent sure [in those situations].”
Unfortunately for Iraola, this time it backfired when it came to Szoboszlai – though Liverpool benefited from the immediate return of Alexander Isak, who scored the winner in his first game back from a thigh injury.
Szoboszlai and Frimpong join Hugo Ekitike (Achilles), Conor Bradley (knee), Giovanni Leoni (ACL) and Vitezslav Jaros (ACL) on the injury list.
Cody Gakpo returned to the squad against Brentford but went unused, while Gravenberch will now return to availability.
