Michael Carrick has BACKED Lisandro Martinez ahead of United's game with Roma – How do you feel about his comments? Should Martinez play vs Roma – or is is time he is dropped to the bench?
Joining Michael Carrick at the Carrington training complex, Kobbie Mainoo insisted that the Red Devils first-team squad has not done enough to earn a more favourable reaction from supporters. The 21-year-old Manchester United midfielder said that the Red Devils’ results are reflective of the mood of the fan base.
“In these tough times, you cannot expect the fans to 100 per cent of the time be happy when we’re not putting out the results,” he explained on Monday afternoon, as per the Manchester Evening News.
“We owe it to them to get better results.”
Mainoo has perfectly summed up why no United player has the right to push back on the Premier League’s fan base. After Man Utd’s loss to Bournemouth last month, the Red Devils supporters shared an emotionally heartfelt reaction to under-pressure manager Michael Carrick at Old Trafford.
As soon as Carrick disappeared out of sight down the Old Trafford tunnel, the cheers from the United supporters turned to boos. Those boos were pretty much intended for the first-team players, as well as the Ineos hierarchy and Sir Jim Ratcliffe. United’s performance against Bournemouth was woeful and the Red Devils’ display looked like it almost cost Carrick his role.

17th in the table – Do United need to take finishing in the bottom three as a serious threat? How worried are YOU about the R word?
However, Chelsea punished Carrick’s side for their missed opportunities in the second half after Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer netted to seal the Blues’ win. The tone from United fans was different at Stamford Bridge compared with the Bournemouth match. Carrick received the conditional support of United fans, who lauded the club legend as a casualty of the Premier League side’s poor ownership.
Even as some United players went over to the travelling support, the reception was mixed. It was nowhere near as volatile as it was at Old Trafford after the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth. United fans could see that the Red Devils had put in a shift for Carrick in the first half. While Mainoo pointed out the results have not been there for United, the tone was different from United fans due to the performance that was put in against Chelsea.
United have moved from an incredibly negative reception against Bournemouth to a mixed one against Chelsea. It sets up everything for the Roma match on Tuesday to create a spine-chilling reaction from the Old Trafford faithful if United can pick up their first win since September. The sliding scale of United fans is nothing short of a reflection of the rollercoaster season under Carrick so far.
Mainoo didn’t defend Man Utd booing — nor would any player in their right mind. But his words set an expectation that United players should be aware that if they don’t perform at a high level, then the reaction will be clear. The Stockport-born talent said United “owe” it to the fans to produce better results — and the reaction will be reflective when the Red Devils finally deliver on their responsibilities on a consistent basis.
