Kicker Charlie Smyth marked his return to NFL action with three field goals and two extra points in the New Orleans Saints' 23-22 overtime victory against the Cleveland Browns.

The former Gaelic footballer, from Mayobridge in County Down, replaced Daniel Carlson as the starting kicker for the game and connected on efforts from 30, 27 and 48 yards as the Saints won for just the third time this season.

While the 25-year-old did miss from 52 yards, it was his extra point following Juwan Johnson's overtime touchdown that ultimately provided the Saints' winning margin after the Browns failed on a two-point conversion to end the game and fall to 5-4.

Smyth's first attempt of the contest came on his side's opening possession. After the Saints drove to the Browns' five-yard line, they lost ground on consecutive plays and had to settle for the 30-yard field goal.

Quarterback Tyler Shough was sacked on third down in midfield on the Saints' next drive, giving Smyth a more challenging 52-yard kick that drifted wide to the right.

The Browns, starting Shedeur Sanders at quarterback in the absence of Deshaun Watson, struggled on offence but took the lead through a pair of Andre Szmyt field goals either side of half-time.

Smyth then tied the game from 27 yards before putting his side ahead with five minutes and 44 seconds remaining thanks to his longest field goal of the day.

The Browns hit back on their next offensive play with a 64-yard catch from rookie wide receiver KC Concepcion to lead 13-9, but the Saints drove 55 yards for an Audric Estime touchdown in response.

Smyth added the extra point, which proved crucial when the Browns quickly got into field-goal range for Szmyt to tie the game at 16-16 from 51 yards with only eight seconds remaining.

The Saints produced an 11-play drive to open overtime with Shough finding Johnson with a 15-yard touchdown pass.

Smyth again added the point after touchdown and that was enough for victory as Sanders' two-point conversion attempt to win the game fell incomplete after a spectacular 39-yard touchdown from Harold Fannin.

A product of the NFL's International Player Pathway, Smyth returned to the Saints' active roster to take over kicking duties from Carlson after the two-time All-Pro was released on Tuesday.

The former Down goalkeeper became the starting kicker for Kellen Moore's side in week 13 last season and made 12 of 16 field goal attempts across the remainder of the 2025 campaign, including a 47-yard game-winner to beat the Carolina Panthers in December.

But he was returned to the practice squad after the Saints signed Carlson in the final stages of training camp for the 2026 season.

The former Las Vegas Raider missed four of his 12 field goal attempts for the Saints, as well as two extra-point attempts, before he was cut this week to pave the way for Smyth's return.
