Hollie Davidson took 50% pay cut to chase rugby dream – now she's making history
Hollie Davidson

Hollie Davidson will be back on the international stage tonight when Ireland face Argentina in Dublin – nine years after making a decision that changed her life.

The Scottish official will serve as an assistant referee at the Aviva Stadium, with Luke Pearce taking charge of the Nations Championship clash.

But Davidson's journey to the top has been anything but straightforward.

Before becoming one of rugby's leading officials, she walked away from a successful banking career and accepted a pay cut of more than 50%.

And she hasn't looked back.

Hollie Davidson's remarkable career gamble

In 2017, Davidson left investment banking giant JP Morgan to become Scotland's first professional female rugby referee.

She had studied economic history at university and appeared to have a promising career in finance.

But rugby was always her passion.

The decision shocked her family and friends, although her boss encouraged her to take the opportunity.

Speaking to The Guardian, Davidson recalled his advice:

"The opportunity to go down this path is once in a lifetime."

Nine years later, that gamble has paid off.

From heartbreak to making history

Davidson once dreamed of representing Scotland as a player.

She came close to making her senior international debut, only for a serious shoulder injury to end those ambitions.

Two operations followed before she turned her attention to refereeing.

Since then, she has taken charge of two Women's Rugby World Cup finals.

In February 2026, she also became the first woman to referee a men's Six Nations match, overseeing Ireland against Italy.

And there is another landmark on the horizon.

Davidson has been appointed to referee France against Argentina on 21 November, becoming the first woman to take charge of a men's France international.

First, though, she returns to Dublin tonight as part of the officiating team for Ireland's opening Nations Championship fixture.

For someone who once gave up half her salary to follow her dream, it's another reminder of just how far she's come.
