West Ham said the decision was a result of 'A thorough review of the start to the season' and 'Believe that a change is necessary at this time in order to ensure that the club’s objectives and expectations remain on track'.
West Ham play away at Cardiff City on Wednesday night before making the trip to North to Ewood Park ahead of Saturday's match.
Rovers will have an extra 24 hours on their opponents and the advantage of successive home games, whilst the Hammers have been travelling and may be without a manager.
Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville have been placed in temporary charge. It remains to be seen whether an appointment will be made before the weekend.
Ex-Burnley boss Scott Parker is the early favourite, having captained the club as a player. With multiple Championship promotions on his CV, it would be a logical choice.
