The impressive victory takes Matt Taylor’s side to 10th in League Two, after a great run of form that has seen his side win three of their last four games.
The away side were held quiet for the majority of the game, taking until the 77th minute to record their first shot on target.
Exeter City started well and had their first attempt saved just four minutes in when Charlie Cummins tried his luck from outside the box.
Crewe enjoyed the majority of shots early on, but couldn’t control their efforts, not troubling the Grecian’s goal in the first half.
George Birch would be the one to create the best chance of the first half in the 20th minute when he was brought down in the box by Joe White.
Scully would step up to take the spot-kick and secure his second goal in the red and white.
Luke Offord would come close to levelling the game half an hour in, his header skimming past the post.
Half Time: Exeter City 1-0 Crewe Alexandra
Both sides would make changes at half-time; the Grecians would bring on Reece Cole for Jake Doyle-Hayes.
The visitors brought on Reece Hutchinson and Charlie McNeill for Kyle Ure and Joe White in search of an equaliser.
Crewe had the better chances of the second half but struggled until late to make their forward efforts threatening, taking until the 77th minute to register a shot on target.
It only took a couple of seconds for the visitors’ second shot on goal, forcing Jack Bycroft into an impressive double save from a chance that looked sure to go in.
The hosts’ impressive defensive records were once again proven to not be a fluke as the Lakyle Samuel, Luca Woodhouse, Jack Taylor and the newly re-signed Jack Fitzwater kept Exeter’s league goals conceded in October at zero after four games.
Bycroft would be called into action again two minutes into the four added on when a powerful header from Adrien Thibaut was parried away well.
Two minutes later, Reece Cole made Crewe’s day unsaveable after outmuscling his way to the ball, Cole, now clean through one-on-one, cleverly chipped his shot over the stranded Crewe goalkeeper, Tom Booth.
Moments after Crewe got the game back underway, referee Harry Wager blew for full-time to jubilant scenes at St James Park.
