The 2012 takeover at Ibrox remains one of the most turbulent periods in the modern history of Rangers, and over a decade later, the figures at the centre of it are still shedding light on the chaos behind closed doors.

Appearing on Richard Keys and Andy Gray’s Keys & Gray Unleashed podcast, former chief executive Charles Green has addressed his fractured relationship with club legend Ally McCoist.

While McCoist stood as the colossal figurehead keeping the club together through liquidation and administration, Green arrived as the corporate buyer steering the consortium acquisition. According to Green, friction between the boardroom and the dugout began before he even stepped foot inside Ibrox.

Charles Green admits he refused to speak to Ally McCoist before Rangers takeover

Green revealed that administrators Duff & Phelps pressed him to speak with McCoist prior to his bid being accepted, but Green flatly refused.

Recounting the conversation, Green said: “The receivers, Duff & Phelps, were saying to me, ‘Do you want to speak to Ally McCoist?’ I said, ‘Why?’ They said, ‘Well, he’s the manager.’

“I said, ‘Yeah, but I’m nobody. I haven’t bought it’. [And they said]. ‘Well, everybody we’ve spoken to has wanted to be able to speak to Ally.’ And I said, ‘Well, look, if you accept my offer, then of course that’s the time to speak to Ally, but today…?'”

That cold, transactional logic meant that McCoist, who was fighting tooth and nail to protect the football club and its staff day-to-day, was left completely in the dark.

Green admitted that this corporate detachment was ultimately what hurt the manager the most, leaving McCoist to discover who was taking over at Rangers at the exact same time as the general public.

He added: “So I think that was an issue that I think Ally wasn’t happy that the first he heard of Charles Green was like everybody else when I was announced.”

While the pair eventually had to present a united front publicly to guide the team through the Third Division campaign, Green’s latest confession lays bare just how rocky the foundations of that Rangers partnership were from day one.

It now remains to be seen if McCoist will lift the lid on what transpired at the club during the turbulent spell all those years ago, providing his perspective on what went on behind the scenes.
