Three things that are working for the Jaguars and three things they need to fix

LONDON -- Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen watched his team give up 34 points, have a touchdown taken off the board because of a penalty, throw an interception in the end zone, get hit with a questionable pass interference penalty in the end zone and give up three plays of 30 or more yards.

So, naturally, he was upset at the 34-31 loss to the Houston Texans at Wembley Stadium on a last-second field goal. But he wasn't shaken.

"I've got a lot of confidence in this team," Coen said. "We didn't get the result we wanted [against Houston]. We're not going to change a thing about our process. Do we have to evaluate and clean up areas in which we need to, specifically in some areas that we just talked about? Absolutely.

"But I have a lot of confidence in this team."

The Jaguars enter their bye week with a 4-2 record and are atop the AFC South with a two-game lead over the Indianapolis Colts and Texans. Their next four opponents have a combined record of 10-13 -- and one of those games is in Jacksonville against the Colts, who haven't beaten the Jaguars on the road since 2014.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence agrees with his coach's confidence heading into an off week.

"We'll have some time to reflect and just see what we need to get better at," Lawrence said after throwing for 300 yards in back-to-back games for just the second time in his career. "I think our team, we've got a lot of confidence. We know who we are. We're not going to go soul-searching or anything like that; it's just how can we continue to do the little things better and better because they cost you in these tight games."

Let's take a look at three things that have gone right and three that have gone wrong with the Jaguars through the first six games.

Three things that are working for the Jaguars

Lawrence is playing at a high level

Lawrence leads the NFL with 14 passing touchdowns and leads the NFL in off-target percentage (9.0%) -- which is by far the lowest of his career (15% in 2025 was his previous low). That stat focuses solely on ball placement, and it shows Lawrence has been accurate.

It also an indication of how good Lawrence's decision-making has been, save for the end zone interception he threw Sunday. And he's doing all that while averaging a career-high 8.0 yards per attempt, too.

Lawrence has yet to play at a high level for a complete season. He had good stretches in the second half of the 2022 and 2025 seasons but struggled in the first parts of those seasons. Not this year ... he's off to a hot start in 2026. If he's able to maintain the pace and the Jaguars again reach the playoffs, he should be in the MVP conversation.

The run defense

The Jaguars led the NFL in rush defense last season and have continued to do so this season under coordinator Anthony Campanile. Opponents are averaging only 72.2 yards per game against them, and a player hasn't rushed for 75 or more yards in a game against them in the Jaguars' past 24 matchups.

Nose tackle DaVon Hamilton has anchored the middle of the defensive line, but Coen said ends Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker, linebackers Foyesade Oluokun and Ventrell Miller, and safety Antonio Johnson are big parts, as well.

Every week the first thing the defensive staff and players emphasize is stopping the run, regardless of which team and quarterback they're facing.

"It's the standard," Coen said. "It's one of our core pillars of success. And I think those guys have bought into it."

Hunter is coming off the best game of his career -- four catches for 59 yards and a touchdown, plus an end zone interception on defense -- and Coen said the Jaguars have to "keep building off of it."

Best of NFL Nation

With cornerback Montaric Brown out the past two weeks because of a hamstring injury, the Jaguars didn't use the rotation they had been using through the first month, and Hunter has played every defensive snap. He hadn't been used much offensively (just two catches) until Sunday, when he played a season-high eight offensive snaps.

Hunter has six pass breakups, and his 57.3 passer rating on throws in which targeted is the 12th best in the league, per NFL Next Gen Stats. It's easy to forget Hunter has played only 13 games after missing 10 last season because of a knee injury, but it looks like he's starting to settle in and get more comfortable as the season progresses.

Three things that the Jaguars need to fix

At this point, the biggest question with Thomas is whether he'll be on the roster after the Nov. 10 trade deadline. Thomas dropped one pass while wide open in the first quarter and failed to come up with a catchable ball late in the first half of the Jaguars' loss to Houston. Those cost the Jaguars at least six points -- the second one would have allowed the Jaguars to try a long field goal at the buzzer and the first would have put them well into Little's field goal range.

Thomas was benched at halftime and we might not see him as a significant part of the offense again. Rookie sixth-round pick Josh Cameron played more in the second half and so did Hunter, who had three catches for 40 yards and a touchdown after halftime. After the game, Coen said Hunter's offensive role needs to expand.

Coen also didn't exactly throw his support behind Thomas the way he has in the past when asked about Thomas' struggles with drops and contact. His response on whether it's tough to have confidence in Thomas going forward: "Week to week. Guys have to step up and make plays."

Thomas has nine catches for 105 yards and a touchdown, which puts him on pace for 26 catches for 298 yards and three touchdowns. His lack of production is surprising considering he had a good offseason -- outside of Parker Washington, Thomas was the most impressive offensive player in OTAs and training camp. But he had two drops in Week 2 against the Broncos and hasn't recovered.

Cameron and Hunter have both earned bigger roles, which would leave Thomas as, at best, the sixth option as a pass catcher behind Washington, Jakobi Meyers, Brenton Strange, Cameron and Hunter. He's maybe even behind Bhayshul Tuten, too. The Jaguars might decide it's time to move on and see what they can get in a trade.

The pass rush

The Jaguars are tied for 10th in the NFL in QB pressures (81) but are tied for 20th in sacks with 11. The top two pass rushers -- Hines-Allen and Walker -- have a combined 3.5 sacks. Three of those sacks came in the season opener (each had 1.5). Hines-Allen hasn't had one since, and Walker managed a half sack against the Eagles in Week 5. That has not been good enough.

Nobody has emerged as a reliable No. 3 pass rusher, either. B.J. Green II had a great camp but was injured in the opener and is on IR. Linebacker Dennis Gardeck and DT Hamilton are tied for third with four QB hits.

The Jaguars were counting on improved coverage in the secondary forcing quarterbacks to hold onto the ball longer to give the rush time to get home. That hasn't happened. Opposing quarterbacks are getting rid of the ball in 2.76 seconds -- the sixth-quickest in the league.

NFL trade deadline: Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. ET

The Jaguars didn't add a pass rusher in the offseason but that's something they should consider at the trade deadline. It might require multiple draft picks because they have only $5 million in cap space -- third-lowest in the league -- and might have to pay a higher price to entice a team to retain some salary, depending on whom they pursue. Arizona's Josh Sweat and Miami's Josh Uche are mentioned as possibly being on the trading block. An intriguing option could be Khalil Mack. He's on a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers, who have $30 million in cap space per Roster Management and could still retain some of his salary.

Kickoff coverage

The Jaguars are allowing 28.9 yards per kickoff return (ranked fourth-worst). The problem earlier in the season was the coverage team struggling to get off blocks, though that has slightly improved after the Jaguars did extra work during several practices.

It's the only thing on special teams the Jaguars aren't doing well.
