‘I couldn’t be prouder’: Joe Lawler hails Tadley Calleva’s FA Cup heroes after Aldershot Fourth Qualifying Round Replay exit

Tadley Calleva’s FA Cup run came to an end as two early goals sent Aldershot Town through to face Barnsley in the First Round Proper.

For 1,150 passionate fans packed into Barlow’s Park on a chilly Tuesday night, the dream of a historic FA Cup cupset ultimately slipped away.

However, for Tadley manager Joe Lawler, the replay highlighted pride in his team.

He said: “I think over the 180 minutes to only lose 4-2 to a National team, a professional team, just shows incredible from the boys – I thought they were absolutely superb.

“I don’t think we’re at our best last night, especially not in the first-half, which was a little disappointing.

“But overall, I couldn’t be prouder of the boys and the way we performed over the two ties and the way we performed over this run.

“It’s been an incredible journey so far and yeah, I couldn’t be prouder.”

Lawler has made it clear that the FA Cup is for the fans, the players, and the club.

When asked what the turnout of support over the historic cup run meant to him as a manager, he said: “For me, it’s just pride, proud to be able to deliver something for the fans that they were excited about and they came out with their numbers for.

“It just shows what happens when a club and a community come together, and that’s what football does.

“I think the last two rounds in particular, and the Dartford game – the numbers have just gone up and up every round.

“We were able to give them something to believe in – they turned out with their numbers – and the memories will stay with us for a very long time.

“I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve done, we just now have to turn our sights to the league.

“It’s been a great run, I’m just very keen to make sure that our season isn’t defined by the FA Cup and the moments that we’ve had aren’t the best moments that we have in the season.”

Following a heroic 2-2 thriller at the EBB Stadium just days prior, Tadley Calleva’s Emirates FA Cup journey came to an end at the hands of a clinical National League outfit, as Aldershot Town secured a professional 2-0 victory to book their place in the First Round Proper to face League One side, Barnsley.

The tie couldn't have started with a more frantic pace.

Both sides flew out of the blocks in front of a buzzing crowd, but the gulf in class – and a ruthless early double advantage from the visitors – proved too much for the hosts to overcome.

It took just seven minutes for the Shots to draw first blood.

Nino Adom-malaki broke the deadlock in stunning fashion, smashing a low, unstoppable drive into the bottom right corner past the helpless Tadley keeper.

Before the home side could regroup, the National League visitors doubled their advantage.

In the 13th minute, Marcus Dinanga was slipped through cleanly before slotting a composed finish into the bottom left corner to make it 2-0.

Aldershot threatened to run away with the game early on, with Brody Peart heading just over the bar shortly after.

Tadley, visibly rattled by the early goals, struggled to find their rhythm under the immense visiting press.

Their first real opening didn't arrive until the 25th minute when Alfie Burton – a huge player in the last match – tried to prod a high ball over the advancing stopper, but the danger was caught.

As the first half drew to a close, a flustered Tadley side found themselves rushing passes under pressure, though the backline worked tirelessly to keep the scoreline respectable at the break.

The second half settled into a relentless wave of Aldershot pressure.

The visitors sought to put the game to bed, utilising the lightning-fast Basil Tuma on the right flank, only to be repeatedly denied by some heroic blocks from the home centre-backs.

Tadley fought valiantly to shift momentum, dispatching long balls to try and let Kieran Rodgers hold up play for onrushing runners, but the Shots continually swept up the second balls.

As the clock ticked down, Tadley threw on fresh legs, introducing Lors Nicholas and later Charlie Barlow – the other hero from the EBB Stadium stalemate – in a last-ditch effort to spark a miracle.

The hosts did manage to mount a late scare in the 86th minute via a dangerous free-kick that caused panic in the Aldershot box.

At the other end, Tadley goalkeeper Donnacha Burke produced a brilliant 1-on-1 save to deny Dinanga in the 89th minute, keeping the scoreline steady.

Despite a fierce, battling defensive display to the final whistle – complete with yellow cards for Burton, Goater, and Alexander Lawrence John Miller – Tadley simply could not breach a resolute Aldershot defence.

When the final whistle blew, the FA Cup dream for 2026 came to a close, but Barlow's Park and its supporters can look back on an unforgettable cup run with immense pride.
