“I enjoy this pressure” – Chelsea arrival eating up criticism and loving Blues fans

Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders has had quite the introduction to life in the Premier League. One costly mistake, plenty of criticism and then a brilliant performance against Manchester United. All in the space of a week.

And judging by his latest interview back in Belgium, the 21-year-old is loving every minute of it.

Penders has spoken about the pressure of playing for Chelsea, his response to that Tottenham blunder and the growing comparisons with Thibaut Courtois.

He’s well aware of how quickly things can change at Stamford Bridge. For now, though, he seems quite happy being thrown into the deep end.

Penders opens up about Chelsea criticism

Speaking to Play Sports in an interview covered by Sporza, Penders admitted the reaction to his mistake against Tottenham was an eye-opener.

“The criticism here is on a different scale,” he explained. “If you make a mistake like that at Genk, everyone will have something to say about it too. But the scale of it here is different.”

The Belgian had punched the ball into his own net against Spurs, hardly the ideal way to announce himself as Chelsea’s new starting goalkeeper. Yet he wasn’t going to lose much sleep over it.

“I stayed calm, because these things can happen and they will happen again. I already had it in my head that I wanted to respond against Liverpool. The fact that I managed to do that makes it feel twice as good now.”

That response continued against Manchester United, when Penders produced a remarkable late save to deny Bryan Mbeumo and preserve Chelsea’s 2-0 lead. He even had to convince his teammates he’d touched the ball.

“Nobody in the dressing room believed I’d got a touch on it,” he laughed. “But I’ve sent the footage to a few teammates now.”

His celebration said plenty about how much it meant.

“Those were all positive emotions coming out. Absolutely brilliant! That’s the best feeling you can have as a goalkeeper. Especially at this level, and particularly after what happened against Tottenham. Everyone saw that…”

Loving the pressure – and the Courtois comparisons

It’s quite a turnaround for someone whose route into Chelsea’s first team looked considerably tougher just a few months ago.

Penders returned from his loan at Strasbourg hoping to compete with Robert Sánchez. Then Chelsea signed Emiliano Martínez, pushing him further down the pecking order.

“Those are situations you have to learn to deal with,” he said. “As a goalkeeper, there’s only ever one place in the team. After that, it was about pushing even harder and keeping going.”

Martínez’s injury eventually opened the door. Penders has since had the chance to show supporters what he can do.

“You always hope for something like this and dream as big as possible. But did I expect it? That’s very difficult in football. Right now, I’m just trying to be there for my team.”

And the attention doesn’t bother him.

“I actually enjoy this pressure. It just makes you a bit better and sharper.”

His performances have also prompted comparisons with another Belgian goalkeeper who made quite an impression at Stamford Bridge. Penders knows all about the Courtois talk.

“I see it quite a lot, especially online. But as I’ve said before, being compared to one of the best goalkeepers in the world is something I see as very positive.”

Well, a few weeks ago he was waiting for an opportunity. Now he’s talking about enjoying the pressure of being Chelsea’s goalkeeper, with supporters comparing him to Courtois. Not a bad few weeks’ work, one rather unfortunate punch aside.
