Fortuna Düsseldorf have parted ways with head coach Alexander Ende after a disappointing start to their third-tier campaign. Former club player Jens Langeneke will take charge of the team on an interim basis.
Fortuna Düsseldorf have sacked head coach Alexander Ende and his assistant Zlatko Muhovic, the club confirmed on Sunday. Jens Langeneke, previously in charge of the club's U23 side, will take over the first team until further notice.
"We have come to the conclusion after a thorough analysis that we need a new impulse now," sporting director Samir Arabi explained, while praising Langeneke's work and commitment to the club.
Ende took charge in April, replacing Markus Anfang, but was unable to prevent Düsseldorf's relegation from the 2. Bundesliga. Their return to the third tier has also been disappointing, with Fortuna sitting in mid-table after ten matches.
The 49-year-old Langeneke knows the club well, having made more than 270 appearances for Düsseldorf's first and second teams as a player. He has worked in the club's youth setup since 2015.
"We all know the situation we are in. Now it's about taking responsibility, bringing our strengths together and showing conviction on the pitch," Langeneke said.
Ende, meanwhile, expressed disappointment at the decision but thanked the players and supporters for their backing. The club have yet to announce how long Langeneke will remain in charge or who will join the first-team coaching staff.
