Mathys Tel consistently featured for Tottenham Hotspur last season, making 31 Premier League appearances last term, mostly from the bench. He had a big role in Spurs avoiding relegation last term under Roberto De Zerbi.
After a slow start to the 2026/27 season, the Frenchman has started adding a bit more consistency to his game. He has started five of Tottenham’s eight Premier League fixtures, scoring a superb solo goal against Chelsea to help secure a memorable victory at Stamford Bridge in October. Roberto De Zerbi praised the youngster’s work ethic and vowed to unlock his true potential after the Chelsea win.
During the off-season, Mathys Tel faced an uncertain future amid suggestions that he was keen to seek a fresh start elsewhere in pursuit of a more prominent role. Turkish champions Galatasaray lodged a loan offer, although nothing concrete materialised and the 21-year-old ultimately stayed at White Hart Lane.
However, the prospect of an exit has not entirely vanished. According to Italian website Area Napoli, Tel is viewed by Napoli as an enticing option because of his ‘explosive ball-carrying ability’, particularly his capacity to drive forward from wide areas. It is claimed the Tottenham talent is one ‘to keep an eye on’.
The Serie A side want to improve their attacking unit and have set their sights on Tel. The 21-year-old’s extreme tactical versatility and ball-carrying ability is admired by the Napoli chiefs. They feel the Tottenham winger’s qualities are an ideal fit for Max Allegri’s system.
Tottenham’s stance on Tel has been clear- he is not for sale. The North Londoners view the France Under-21 international as part of their long-term plans. De Zerbi rates the player highly and has openly spoken about unlocking his true potential.
With high-profile attackers in the form of Savio and Omar Marmoush arriving at the club from Manchester City in the summer, the Sarcelles-born talent has dropped down the pecking order. An injury to Savio has allowed Tel the opportunity to start recent games, and he has repaid the gaffer’s faith.
After 20 months of adaptation, Tel has to further improve his decision-making and end product in the final third if he is to become a valuable player in De Zerbi’s system.
