Ex-Burnley and Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez retires

The 37-year-old forward had been without a club since departing Wrexham at the end of last season.

A local lad, Rodriguez began his career at Turf Moor and made his senior debut against Bristol City in December 2007.

He had a loan spell at Stirling Albion before scoring his first Burnley goal against Fulham in the League Cup the following season.

Rodriguez became a regular in the first team as the Clarets won promotion to the Premier League. He also scored a memorable goal against Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup semi-final.

A loan spell at Barnsley followed before becoming a key member of the Burnley squad after relegation back to the Championship, scoring 15 goals during the 2010/11 campaign.

The forward found the net 21 times the following season and was snapped up by Southampton for a £7million price tag.

Rodriguez won an England cap in November 2013, coming off the bench in a friendly against Chile at Wembley.

However, he suffered a serious knee injury in April 2014 that kept him out of action for more than a year.

Rodriguez headed to West Brom in 2017, where he would spend the next couple of years before making an emotional return to his hometown club.

During his second spell at Turf Moor, the forward scored a memorable goal at Old Trafford as Burnley beat Manchester United.

He was part of the squad that won the Championship title under Vincent Kompany in 2022/23.

Rodriguez left Turf Moor to join Wrexham in January 2025 and helped the Welsh club secure promotion to the Championship. However, his playing time was limited by injuries last term.

The 37-year-old made more than 300 appearances across both spells at Turf Moor, scoring 76 goals.

Rodriguez confirmed his retirement to I Had Trials Once Podcast, admitting that injuries had played a big part in the decision to hang up his boots.

“Officially retired,” he said. “I thought it would be harder for myself but I think having the last year I had at Wrexham; it was a great experience for myself.

“But I had an injury at the start of the season which put me out for three or four months and then I got back but had another injury with my knee, a minor one, but it was still four weeks.”
