Spencer Lee and Levi Haines claimed titles on the last day of the World Wrestling Championships, ensuring the U.S. won the most gold medals outright at a full worlds for the first time.
Lee (57kg) and Haines (79kg) pushed the Americans to seven total titles at worlds in Kazakhstan, one more than Iran.
Seven matched the most titles that the U.S. has ever won at a single worlds (2022). The U.S. matched its program record for total medals with 15.
The U.S. also won the most golds at the 2012 Worlds with two, an edition with women’s events only.
The other Americans to win earlier in the meet were Adaugo Nwachukwu (62kg) and Everest Leydecker (55kg) in women’s freestyle and Bo Bassett (65kg), Kyle Dake (86kg) and Kyle Snyder (97kg) in men’s freestyle.
Lee, the 2024 Olympic silver medalist who missed the podium at 2025 Worlds, beat Roman Bravo-Young of Mexico 10-0 in Sunday’s 57kg final. Match video is here.
Lee came back from tearing an ACL (for a fourth time) about three months ago.
“I was going to concede the spot (on the U.S. team),” said a tearful Lee, sporting a black eye. “I go, you know, I’ve done it before, and I said I’ll just go win it anyways.
“I don’t got many more tears left in me, so I don’t know if I’ll be back next year. I’ll probably have to have surgery.”
In Saturday’s semifinals, Lee pinned Islam Bazarganov of Azerbaijan while down 10-5.
Haines, an NCAA champion for Penn State this past March, followed his silver at 79kg in 2025 with gold on Sunday.
He beat Mohammad Nokhodi of Iran 4-3 in the final of the non-Olympic weight class, one year after losing his final by one point. Match video is here.
At 92kg, another non-Olympic weight, American Trent Hidlay followed his 2025 gold with silver. Russian Amanula Gadzhimagomedov beat Hidlay 3-2.
