Scottish Premiership: Ten-man St Johnstone claim point at Kilmarnock; Motherwell grab late win

St Johnstone manager Simo Valakari was not for blaming goalkeeper Toby Steward, who was sent off in the first half for handling outside his penalty box.

The Finn stressed that he wants his goalkeepers to come off their line.

"That’s my tactical choice," he tells BBC Scotland. "I want my keeper to be like a sweeper behind those long balls.

"And he has been very good, he reads those moments.

"As you know in football, it’s a teeny, teeny line you know, where he was and now this time it went this way, a red card, but Ross Sinclair came in and made some great saves."

These two have now served up 11 goals in their two meetings this season. Put me down for the next match.

Good football, good goalkeeping - some very bad goalkeeping - chances, entertainment. It was all there.

St Johnstone, of course, will be by far the happier side. They played with 10 men for well over 75 minutes, equalised twice and defended well when they had to. They can be thoroughly proud of their efforts.

For Kilmarnock, it's the one that got away. They scored two good goals, created a plethora of other chances but couldn't find that clinical edge.

Great game all round.

Substitute Tyreece John-Jules nearly puts Killie back in front with an overhead kick. It just flashes past the post instead.

You get the sense there are more goals in this one, especially as Nicky Clescenco then rolls another one just past the left-hand post of a stranded Ross Sinclair.

Killie can't believe it's still all square.

Some scary Halloween misses in the first half by both these teams and that’s probably the reason why they are in the position they are in the table.

Well should have been three up with Maswanhise and Said culpable for passing up glorious opportunities. And, when Saints eventually woke up, both Sule and Nsio have found themselves in great positions only for those to go begging.

Surely someone can find themselves net in the second half!

Things were starting to pick up at the end of that half, but it ends goalless at Fir Park.

Motherwell were certainly the better of the sides for the majority of the first period and were unlucky not to be ahead after missed chances from both Tawanda Maswanhise and Ibrahim Said.

St Mirren grew into the game and looked a bit livelier towards the end of that half but didn't threaten Alex Paulsen in the Motherwell goal.

St Mirren's first real opportunity to threaten as they win a corner.

It's a good delivery that Motherwell's Tom Sparrow heads behind for a corner on the other side.

It comes to nothing and Motherwell race up the other end, where Ibrahim Said finds himself one on one with goalkeeper Jacob Chapman.

The Well attacker leaves it too late to get his shot away and Chapman saves.

Motherwell manager Alfred Johansson tells BBC Scotland: "We're so happy to have some key players back. It's going to be about building minutes for them over at least a month, but it's very positive to have them back.

"The changes for this game it was quite easy to make the decisions based on Lukas Fadinger being ready again to start the game - he was not on Wednesday.

"Jardell Kanga, against Celtic especially and Hearts and in St Johnstone, has come off the bench and performed well, so he deserves his chance in the XI.

"The start of the season, we got thrown into a crazy programme where you have to play three or four days. We had a lot of new players and everyone was very excited.

"I think we coped with that really well, but when that period was over, it felt like we were back to reality. That's where you have to build the foundations of the team.

"I think the performances have been a little bit up and down, but we feel like the performances have deserved much more points than we have got.

"One thing we can improve is how we protect our own box. We need to be more aggressive in how we defend the wide areas."
