Manchester United have reportedly made a key decision on Harry Amass ahead of the January transfer window, as they look to resolve ongoing uncertainty at left-back.
The 19-year-old academy graduate had been linked with a permanent departure from Old Trafford during the summer. However, United now appear ready to protect his future by extending his contract, while leaving open the possibility of another loan move.
With injuries affecting the club’s senior defensive options, Amass’ situation could become increasingly important in the coming months.
According to the Evening Standard, Manchester United are preparing to trigger a 12-month extension clause in Amass’ existing contract.
The decision would give the club greater control over the defender’s future and prevent him from approaching the end of his deal without a resolution.
Amass attracted interest from Burnley during the summer after spending time on loan with Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City. A permanent exit appeared possible, but United ultimately retained the youngster.
The club’s latest reported decision suggests they are not ready to lose control of a player who remains a promising defensive prospect.
United’s situation at left-back has been complicated by fitness concerns involving Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu.
Shaw has struggled with injuries throughout his career, while Dorgu has provided an alternative option when available. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui can also cover the position, although both are more naturally suited to right-back.
These issues could influence whether Amass stays at Old Trafford or is allowed to leave on loan in January.
Regular first-team football would be valuable for the young defender’s development, but United may be reluctant to weaken their depth while senior players remain unavailable.
A temporary move remains a possibility if United believe Amass would benefit from more regular playing time elsewhere.
His previous loan spells offered opportunities to gain senior experience, although an injury interrupted his time at Norwich City last season.
United must now balance his development against their immediate need for defensive cover. Extending his contract would give the club additional flexibility to make that decision without risking his longer-term value.
The situation could also affect United’s plans for recruiting another left-back, particularly if the club decide they need a more established option.
United’s reported decision to extend Amass’ contract would provide greater security over his future, but it does not guarantee that he will remain in the first-team squad for the rest of the season.
A January loan could still make sense if Shaw and Dorgu are fit enough to provide cover. If injuries continue, however, Amass may have an opportunity to establish himself at Old Trafford.
