Report: Bears showed interest in trade for All-Pro DT DeForest Buckner

The Chicago Bears have one of the best offenses in the NFL, but as their loss to the Green Bay Packers and touchdown at the end of the first half against the New England Patriots proved, they could use some help on defense.

General manager Ryan Poles seems to have full knowledge of that as he reportedly inquired about trading for All-Pro defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

The Indianapolis Colts decided to trade Buckner back to his former team, the San Francisco 49ers, for a fourth round pick. Buckner may not be as well suited to the Bears since he has struggled on run defense this year despite having a top-15 pass rusher PFF grade among defensive tackles.

Chicago has also been linked to their former defensive player, Khalil Mack, who would appear to be a better fit for the Bears’ defense. His PFF grade is among the best in pass rush and run blocking among edge rushers. Mack is currently signed to a one-year, $18 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers, making him a far more expensive acquisition than Buckner would have been.

During his four years with the Bears, Mack played in 53 games. In that time, he had two interceptions, including a pick-six in his first game with Chicago against the Green Bay Packers. He also forced 14 fumbles, had 36 sacks and a safety in the Bears’ 2020 win against the Houston Texans.
