The WXV Global Series fixture between Japan and Wales was brought to a halt during the second half following a serious injury sustained by Freya Bell. Proceedings were suspended for over six minutes, with medical personnel from both sides treating the Wales player on the field at Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo. At 52 minutes and with Wales ahead 7-0, centre Bell collapsed clutching her leg following a clear-out at a ruck.
Play initially carried on around her as she remained on the ground gripping her leg in visible distress, with a Wales medic attending to her. The referee subsequently called a stoppage, allowing Bell to receive treatment.
"Freya Bell looks in some real discomfort there," BBC Wales commentator Gareth Rees Owen said.
"Her right knee I think? Oh no. Just a horrible sight.
"We may be a while here now."
He added: "Our concerns are now with Freya Bell. Oh goodness."
Co-commentator and former Wales international Philippa Tuttiett added: "They do seem to be isolating that knee. Such a young player as well."
Wales co-captain Alex Callender, marking her 50th cap, was seen consoling her team-mate as the medical staff attempted to help Bell, who was in agony on the floor.

"Absolutely not (good to see)," Tuttiett noted as three medical professionals worked on Bell's leg, who were subsequently assisted by the Japanese support team. "Especially for the players left on the field, seeing your team-mate go down like that."
Following a lengthy delay, Bell was carried off the pitch on a stretcher, which will undoubtedly be a major worry for Wales head coach Sean Lynn.
Owen continued: "It's so nice to see Alex Callender there supporting her."
Bell was substituted by Courtney Keight.
Wales took the lead courtesy of Seren Lockwood's opening try, which Bell successfully converted in the first half.
