Torquay must move on after missing out on Leicester tie
Jimmy Ball claps on the sidelines

Torquay United manager Jimmy Ball says his players have to "move on" after missing out on a glamourous first-round FA Cup tie.

The Gulls lost 1-0 at home to National League North side Oxford City last week - a loss that Moore said had "too many average performances in a big game".

The result proved even more disappointing after their opponents went on to draw former Premier League champions and 2021 FA Cup winners Leicester City away in the first round.

"We knew that had we won, we could have got something like that, and that was what everyone was dreaming of," Moore told BBC Radio Devon.

"It didn't happen and you've got to move on.

"We played three games in the FA Cup this season, which was two more than the last couple of seasons, and that's no disrespect to the people here before because I don't mean to be disrespectful to them, it's just a fact.

"I wanted to win more than one, I want to continue to step forward.

"If the steps forward we're making aren't quick enough or aren't big enough for some people, there's not a lot I can do.

"All I can do is try to move the club forward and that's what I signed up to do and that's what I'm determined to continue doing."

The Gulls, who lost in last season's play-off final, have won just one league game since their FA Cup campaign began against eighth-tier AFC Stoneham last month - a 5-1 win over 10-man Slough Town.

They have slipped to 13th in National League South as they prepare to host leaders Maidstone United who are nine points above them.

Torquay go into the game having thrashed Holsworthy 11-0 on Tuesday night in the quarter finals of the Devon FA St Luke's Challenge Cup, where a large number of first-team players started.

"It could have turned sloppy once you're three up, four up, but they didn't, the mentality was great," Ball said.

"You've got Matt Jay sprinting 60 yards at the end of a game when you're already winning 10-0 to score an 11th.

"It says to me the attitude's right, it says to me the group are trying and having a go, it says to me lots of positive things.

"I know that the players are good, we've just got to be consistently good and a little bit more ruthless to win to see off games.

"But I know the players are good, I've never doubted that for a second."
