Detroit Lions announce pair of Tuesday roster moves

Fresh off a massive 19-15 win over the previously-unbeaten Minnesota Vikings, the Detroit Lions (5-2) are readying for a road trip to Dan Campbell's old stomping grounds.

The Lions battle the Miami Dolphins (1-6) on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. ET from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Campbell spent the 2010-15 NFL seasons as part of the Dolphins' organization, serving as a coaching intern (2010), as tight ends coach (2011-15), and as the interim head coach (2015).

Ahead of its date at Miami, the Lions made a pair of Tuesday roster moves. Detroit waived defensive back Bishop Fitzgerald and placed rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder on injured reserve.

Campbell announced on Monday that Rolder had suffered a season-ending injury.

The Lions signed the rookie Fitzgerald off the Pittsburgh Steelers' practice squad in late September as they placed Avonte Maddox on injured reserve. A 5-foot-11, 201-pound safety out of USC, Fitzgerald never appeared in a game with the Lions.

Fitzgerald was a first-team All-American last year at USC by the Associated Press, Walter Camp, and by the Football Writers Association of America. A USC transfer from NC State, Fitzgerald finished the regular season leading the Big Ten and ranking second nationally with five interceptions.

Fitzgerald was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award and the Lott IMPACT Trophy as he tallied 51 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, three pass breakups and one sack.

The Lions are signing linebacker K.J. Britt off the Patriots' practice squad, but releasing Fitzgerald means Detroit has another roster spot open.

With the NFL trade deadline set for Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. ET, Fitzgerald's release could be the first domino toward Lions general manager Brad Holmes making an acquisition.

Detroit also hosted linebacker Owen Pappoe for a Tuesday visit, per Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network.
