Martin O’Neill has suggested Callum Osmand could eventually play alongside a centre-forward after the youngster marked his first Celtic start with two goals against Hearts.
Sunday was also Osmand’s first start in senior professional football, making his contribution to the 7-1 victory all the more impressive.
The forward operated from a wide position, but O’Neill believes there could be a different role for him further down the line.
Our Celtic manager page covers his record and background.
Speaking on Tuesday ahead of Celtic’s Europa League meeting with Celta Vigo, the manager told CelticPlayer:
“If you think about young Osmand playing wide, that was his first start ever for Celtic.
“He’s played wide, it’s not really his favourite position. He wants to probably play alongside a centre-forward. Hopefully that will happen in time.
“Callum did very, very well, scored the goals and looked a really decent player.”
Osmand made a real impact from the left, with his willingness to run behind Hearts’ defence giving Celtic a threat they have too often lacked this season.
Yet O’Neill’s comments suggest there is scope to use him closer to another striker, where those runs could become an even bigger part of Celtic’s attacking play.
The young striker has put himself firmly in contention for another start against Celta Vigo on Thursday.
His encouraging appearance from the bench against Benfica earned him the opportunity against Hearts. Two goals later, he has given O’Neill a strong reason to keep him involved.
It has taken patience to reach this point.
After arriving last summer, Osmand scored against Rangers at Hampden and helped Celtic clinch the title against Hearts on the final day.
But a hamstring injury interrupted his first season, with another setback this term further delaying his push for a starting place.
Celtic now need to turn Sunday’s performance into sustained improvement, particularly in Europe.
With no points from their opening two Europa League matches, Thursday carries considerable importance. If Osmand gets another opportunity, he will approach it having shown just how much he can offer.
