Scott McTominay was furious in a post-match interview after Napoli were beaten 4-1 by Porto in the Champions League. The ex-Manchester United midfielder is yet to renew his contract in Italy and reports suggest his team-mates are currently at war with one another.

McTominay has been a revelation for the Serie A heavyweights since arriving from Old Trafford in 2024 but even he could not stop his side from being outclassed on Wednesday night. The Scot did equalise in Portugal after ex-Southampton defender Jan Bednarek gave the home side the lead.

But a disastrous final 20 minutes saw Porto trio Gabri Veiga, Jakub Kiwior and Samu Aghehowa score, with the latter firing in a penalty. This disappointment took place amid contract discussions between McTominay's representatives and the Italians.

Napoli have only won one and lost three of their opening four Champions League matches this season and are also eighth in Serie A. Whilst McTominay made it clear he was "angry" with the result and various injuries that his team have been struck with, other Napoli stars seemingly tried to shift the blame onto other players.

Speaking to CBS Sports, McTominay said: "I'm angry, of course I'm angry, we've just lost 4-1 in the Champions League. There's nothing to smile about. For us, we need to go home and try to figure out ways how to fix it.

"We've got a lot of injuries and a lot of important players who can change matches and attacking players as well. Let's not get it twisted here and let's not beat around the bush. We've got a lot of injuries and that makes a big difference when you come to play every three days.

"Things like this can make a huge difference to a team when the same players are playing over and over again. People have to understand that, but also we need to do better. First and foremost, we need to do better, but injuries in football are part of it, but we have too many at the minute."

He was not the only one who vented post-game as team-mate Matteo Politano uttered a cryptic dig at the non-Italian players within the squad. Politano, who wore the captain's armband in the absence of usual skipper Giovanni Di Lorenzo, said: "I wish another team-mate could come and explain things, not always us Italians."

Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that tension is running high in Massimiliano Allegri's squad and the dressing room is souring. As the game against Porto ended, Kevin De Bruyne could be seen exchanging heated words with fellow Napoli star Lorenzo Lucca. The two engaged in a full-blown argument.

In the background, Napoli are working hard to commit McTominay to a new contract. The 29-year-old currently has two years left on his deal, but Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna has already made it clear they are in the process of committing him to a new one.

Until the Scot has officially extended his stay, though, his future could perhaps be described as uncertain and all of the unrest within the Napoli ranks cannot be positive for proceedings.

Nevertheless, Manna recently insisted both McTominay and the club want to keep working together. The Napoli figurehead said: "Scott has a two-year contract left, he wants to stay and we also want him to stay as long as possible.

"Then there's also the financial aspect to reconcile. We're working on it, and we'll continue to do so. We hope to find a solution that makes both us and the player happy.

"He's an important player for us, probably the most important player we have, given what he's achieved over the last two years."
