Eagles' running back crisis deepens after Dameon Pierce lands on IR

The Philadelphia Eagles have struggled to establish offensive consistency through the first seven games of the season, and their revolving running back rotation shows how much injuries have complicated that process.

Philadelphia has already used six running backs, with Dameon Pierce leading the group in snaps despite starting the season on the practice squad. The situation became more complicated Wednesday when the Eagles placed Pierce on injured reserve and signed Jaydon Blue to the active roster ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Washington Commanders.

According to The Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff McLane, Pierce leads Philadelphia's running backs with 151 offensive snaps, followed by Will Shipley (104), Saquon Barkley (101), Tank Bigsby (63), Elijah Mitchell (14) and Carson Steele (3).

The numbers highlight the instability of an Eagles rushing attack that has struggled to build continuity, with injuries repeatedly forcing head coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Sean Mannion to adjust personnel.

Eagles running back snap counts through Week 7

The six backs have combined for 436 offensive snaps. Pierce accounts for the largest share of those snaps, despite playing in only three games.

Pierce's placement on injured reserve is particularly significant because the veteran had emerged as Philadelphia's most-used running back after injuries sidelined Barkley, Shipley, and Bigsby.

The former Houston Texans starter appeared in three games for Philadelphia, recording 96 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries. Pierce started against the Carolina Panthers in Week 6 and played a prominent role during Monday night's 38-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

He carried 14 times for 47 yards and a touchdown against Dallas, helping Philadelphia establish an early rushing attack before he suffered a fourth-quarter injury. The Eagles have not publicly specified the nature of Pierce's injury, but his placement on injured reserve requires him to miss at least four games. Philadelphia Eagles+1

The loss creates another major problem for an offense that has struggled to maintain a healthy rotation all season.

Barkley returned against Dallas after missing two games with a hamstring injury, but the veteran suffered a back injury during Monday night's loss and was unable to finish the contest. Philadelphia listed him as a nonparticipant on Wednesday's estimated injury report because of hamstring and back injuries.

With Pierce now sidelined, the Eagles have limited experienced options available if Barkley cannot play against Washington.

Shipley remains on injured reserve because of a foot injury, while Bigsby is also sidelined after suffering an injury against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 4. Steele, who appeared briefly earlier in the season, was waived with an injury designation and later departed the roster.

Injuries have forced Philadelphia to continually reshape its rushing attack, with players taking on expanded roles before becoming unavailable themselves.

The Eagles addressed their latest setback Wednesday by signing Blue from the practice squad to the active roster. The former Dallas Cowboys fifth-round pick spent time on Philadelphia's active roster earlier this season but has not recorded an offensive snap for the Eagles.

Blue appeared in five games with Dallas as a rookie in 2025, rushing for 129 yards and a touchdown on 34 carries. The former Texas standout gives Philadelphia another option behind Barkley, though his limited experience in the Eagles' offense could slow his path to a significant role. Philadelphia Eagles Mitchell also remains an option after joining Philadelphia earlier this month. The veteran has appeared in the backfield during the Eagles' recent games and could see his responsibilities increase as the coaching staff evaluates its available personnel.

Philadelphia's running game showed encouraging signs against Dallas, particularly in the first quarter, when Barkley opened the game with a 29-yard run before scoring an 8-yard touchdown.

Pierce followed with a 5-yard touchdown run on the Eagles' second possession, helping Philadelphia establish an early lead against its NFC East rival.

However, the Eagles struggled to sustain that production, and injuries eventually left the offense with fewer options as Dallas pulled away. The instability has been particularly challenging for Mannion, who is also working with Tanner McKee as the starting quarterback following Jalen Hurts' season-ending absence.

A productive running game would ease pressure on McKee and create more favorable passing situations for Philadelphia's young receiving corps. Instead, the Eagles have repeatedly had to adjust their personnel, making it hard to build chemistry in the backfield and establish a consistent offensive identity.

Philadelphia enters Week 8 ranked 29th in scoring at 18.1 points per game and 31st in total offense at 264.9 yards per contest. The team can finish drives in the red zone, but it still struggles to generate enough sustained possessions. The Eagles will face a Washington defense that has struggled to prevent touchdowns inside the 20-yard line, giving Philadelphia a chance to improve its offensive production.

Whether the Eagles can take advantage of that matchup may depend on which running backs they have available.

Barkley's health remains the biggest question, and Blue and Mitchell could take on larger roles depending on the veteran's status.

The Eagles also announced Wednesday that they signed guard Evan Beerntsen, wide receiver Quentin Skinner and defensive back Shaun Wade to the practice squad, continuing a series of roster adjustments as injuries affect multiple position groups. For a Philadelphia team that has lost five straight games, constant running back changes have become another obstacle to building offensive consistency.

Six players have already taken offensive snaps at the position through seven games. With Pierce joining Shipley and Bigsby on injured reserve, the Eagles could soon add another name to that list.
