The New York Yankees once again failed in the playoffs despite being third in payroll this season. The Tampa Bay Rays swept them in the American League Championship Series before Tampa suffered a World Series gentleman's sweep at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy recognizes the salary constraints small market teams like his deal with, and mics caught him giving impending free agent Jake Bauers an important (and hilarious) reminder in case the Brewers can't afford to bring him back.
“You’re gonna be a rich (expletive)," Murphy said. "Just remember when you’re on that horse (expletive) Yankee team and you’re all playing for yourselves. Just remember: This is way we used to do it”
Bauers, 31, played on a one-year, $2.7 million deal this season and could possibly get quite the raise heading into 2027. This was the best season of Bauers' career, as he hit .266/.389/.484 with 26 home runs and 86 RBI over 144 games.
In the immediate aftermath of his first World Series triumph, however, Bauers didn't want to hear anything about leaving.
"You're not getting rid of me that easy," Bauers responded to Murphy.
The vibes in Milwaukee couldn't be better right now.
