Brentford 1-2 Liverpool: Muñoz and Isak complete comeback

The defeat was Brentford's first at home since a 2-0 defeat to Brighton in February, but the manner of this one will have definitely frustrated the head coach, Keith Andrews.

As a result, the win for Liverpool saw them overtake the Bees in the Premier League table, going into fifth place.

After a slow opening, Brentford almost broke the deadlock through Michael Kayode.

After neat play involving Dango Ouattara, the right back ventured into the penalty area but his goalbound effort was deflected behind by Jérémy Jacquet.

Liverpool almost made the hosts pay immediately, but Bradley Barcola wasted a glorious opportunity to give the visitors the lead.

After failing to deal with a high ball from a corner, Barcola found himself one-on-one against Caoimhín Kelleher but somehow failed to hit the target.

The contest was resembling as a tennis match, both sides going back and forth.

Liverpool thought they had the opportunity to break the deadlock, having initially been given a penalty following a challenge on Alexis Mac Allister.

However, VAR intervened and overturned the decision after Dango Ouattara had won the ball inside the penalty area.

If it was Brentford's reprieve, then they certainly took full advantage as they took the lead just before the break.

Igor Thiago's excellent cross from the right found the left-back Keane Lewis-Potter, who headed expertly past Alisson.

However, things would take a drastic and costly turn when Yehor Yarmoliuk was sent off following a VAR review. The Ukrainian was adjudged to have headbutted Jacquet, and they were brutally made to pay.

Florian Wirtz found Muñoz down the right-hand side, and the Spaniard turned out Lewis-Potter and curled past Kelleher to bring Andoni Iraola's side level.

The Reds smelt blood and they completed the comeback through Alexander Isak, who often tormented Brentford during his days at Newcastle.

Mac Allister's cross found Barcola, whose header found the Swede to sweep home and make it five Premier League goals in seven meetings against the Bees.

Iraola's side had chances to kill the game off, but were wasteful in front of goal. To Brentford's credit, they huffed and puffed but ultimately to no avail.

More salt were rubbed into the Brentford wounds as they were reduced to nine when Vitaly Janelt was sent off. Andrews will be hoping his side can bounce back away at Hull City next Sunday.

Brentford XI: Kelleher; Kayode, Ajer, van den Berg (Hickey 71), Lewis-Potter (Diouf 77); Janelt, Yarmoliuk, Jensen (Sangaré ht); Ouattara (Schade ht), Thiago, Anthony (Damsgaard 77).

Subs: Valdimarsson, Wilson, Carvalho, Collins.
