Exclusive: Ally McCoist knows as well as anyone what it takes to win a title. The 9IAR hero and former manager of Rangers spoke exclusively to Ibrox Noise on a range of topics, and in this one we reveal what he thinks about where Rangers are and what the Dundee draw did for our chances.
We asked him about how Derek McInnes had really got things sailing at Ibrox and how worried he was after the first handful of matches when it wasn’t going quite so well? And where that draw with Dundee put us.
He wasn’t holding back:
“Rangers had won seven in a row, including two massive games against Celtic, where they were I would even go as far as to say in these two games they were really comfortable winners, and then the game at Celtic Park they looked pretty comfortable.
“The game with Dundee kind of halted their momentum a lot, slowed it down a little bit even. Watching it, Dundee did very well in the first half and then Rangers were in complete control in the second half, scored two goals.
“Actually, two fantastic goals, but switched off and gave away two really poor ones, particularly the second when Dan Neil was caught in possession. That said, they are doing well.
“If somebody said two months ago that you go on a run of seven in a row and beat Celtic twice, you’d settle for it. So they’re in a far, far better place than they were, and Derek seems to have certainly turned it around.
“But Derek knows as well as anyone that the games at Dundee, if you’re gonna win the title, are the ones you have to sneak a victory somewhere along the line. So massive improvement, and a little bit of a disappointment against a good Dundee side. But Derek will be pleased overall.”
And that’s the rub, as Ally (and Derek) will know. As McInnes said pre-match, it’s the same 3 points you win against Celtic that you do v Dundee, and two of those were dropped at Dens.
It’s true that McInnes will be pleased overall, but as Ally says he knows that blips like the weekend are where titles are lost.
Celtic have now got a 4-point gap, a far superior goal difference and very few injuries. Their squad is in better overall shape domestically than Rangers, and they’re free scoring without their most expensive striker.
They are better placed than Rangers right now, which shows just how one single weekend can completely change the complexion of a title race. As Ally said, had we had a 7IAR and 2 wins against Celtic in a row in there we’d have bitten your hand off for it. But the bigger picture makes that joy short sighted and now Celtic have the whole thing in their hands again.
