Manchester United fans had a lot to say about Diogo Dalot after the Red Devils’ Champions League encounter against Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
Michael Carrick has been relying on Diogo Dalot to play as an inverted full-back after the absences of left-backs Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu due to injuries.

Diogo Dalot played a key part in Manchester United falling behind at Old Trafford after only 11 minutes in their latest Champions League clash. The Man Utd defender lost track of the run from Matias Soule, who had acres of space behind the Red Devils’ backline. Rodrigo Mora’s long diagonal ball over the top found Matias Soule, who had plenty of time to compose himself on the right side of the penalty area.
Soule then beat Senne Lammens to stun the United fans inside Old Trafford and hand Roma the early advantage in Tuesday evening’s Champions League tie. United supporters on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, were baffled that Harry Amass was on the bench and not starting ahead of Dalot as a more natural left-back option.
One Man Utd supporter tweeted: “There is no way Harry Amass can be worse than Dalot at LB.”
“How is Dalot still starting? Amass can’t be worse than this, man,” someone else shared.
Another Red Devils fan wrote: “Play Amass instead of Dalot… he’s having a nightmare here.”
“Should just play Amass at left-back. That’s the sensible thing to do. Dalot is so positionally unaware it’s absurd,” a fourth X user commented.
Somebody else added: “Honestly, Carrick playing Dalot over and over again after each blunder is his choice. Play Amass or try someone else.”
While a sixth said: “There is no way Amass is worse than Dalot — I refuse to believe it.”
“I’d rather see Harry Amass playing at left-back; yeah, he’s young and will make mistakes, but [he] can’t be no [sic] worse than Dalot,” a seventh posted.
An eighth claimed: “If Eddie Howe can banish Dalot and promote Amass or literally anyone else, then I’ll be on board with the hiring.”
Harry Amass had managed only four United first-team appearances in the 2026-27 campaign ahead of the Roma clash on Tuesday. The 19-year-old United youth academy product has been a contentious point for Red Devils supporters due to his lack of playing time under Michael Carrick.
