Alan Shearer has been told he is 'way too emotional' about Newcastle United by The Rest is Football podcast co-host Micah Richards after the Magpies returned to winning ways at the weekend.

Goals from Will Osula and Harvey Barnes saw Matthias Jaissle's side run out 2-0 winners at Crystal Palace as they bounced back from brutal defeats to Coventry City and Aston Villa.

Jaissle's tactical setup had been questioned and Shearer had warned the 38-year-old head coach would face fan anger if he could not find solutions for how easily his team conceded chances.

So when Shearer interrupted their latest podcast to ask Richards and fellow co-host Gary Lineker about their thoughts on the team 'eighth in the Premier League', Richards gave Shearer a dressing down before declaring Newcastle will be 'fine' this season, even if he feels they need to sign a couple of players in the January transfer window.

"Here's what I think," Richards said. "I think you are way too emotional about Newcastle. When they are up, you are up and when they are down, you are too down.

"I think Jaissle is doing a fantastic job [at a] new club. At times, yes, they lack a little bit of... I don't know if it is a litle bit of creativity, I don't know if it's a little bit of calmness on the pitch. It has sometimes looked a little bit erratic.

"But from when I first saw Newcastle earlier in the season, I liked the way they looked because even what they lack sometimes in quality, they make up for in running and working for each other. Newcastle will be fine.

"I think in January you could do with a couple [of new signings] but for now, Newcastle are doing just fine.."

The Magpies will look to build on their success at Selhurst Park in a double header against Everton in the next week. Newcastle make the trip to Merseyside in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Thursday before welcoming the Toffees to St James' Park on Monday evening in the Premier League.
