Tottenham Hotspur came out on top against newly-promoted Coventry City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday night.
James Maddison announced his first start of the campaign with a bang, netting a fantastic curling goal past goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. Jack Rudoni gave the travelling Coventry City fans something to cheer when he equalised after the break. Eventually, the cream came on top, as goals from Omar Marmoush and veteran Ben Davies settled the contest.
The first seven games of this new campaign under Roberto De Zerbi have yielded just one win, yet the 3-1 success over Coventry City showcased why brighter days may now lie ahead for the Lilywhites.
It was a night full of positives for Spurs; Maddison scoring on his first start after 18 months, club-record signing Sandro Tonali delivering his best performance in a Tottenham shirt and Dejan Kulusevski returning from an injury hell of 366 days on the sidelines.
However, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher feels Tottenham suffered from a lack of confidence even during their first Premier League win of the season. The Sky Sports pundit claims that Davies’ goal in the 95th minute calmed the hearts of the supporters on an “edgy” night.
“It felt edgy all night and didn’t change until Ben Davies got the goal right at the end,” Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football (h/t Football London).
“You can understand. It has been so tough for them in that new stadium. They never really have any belief the team are going to win. I don’t think the team believe they are going to win it.
“Hopefully for Tottenham, this is going to be the start of getting some belief going forward that they can actually win games in the stadium.”
The N17 faithful breathed a huge sigh of relief at the full-time whistle on Monday evening. Tottenham fans have been hurt by several last-minute heartbreaks at home in recent years, and until Davies’ goal in injury time, it was all jittery inside the stadium.
The win over Coventry would have given belief to De Zerbi’s boys, but it remains to be seen whether they finally start turning a corner in the Premier League. Next up is a trip to Chelsea, and the Lilywhites have to be at their best in all departments to get a result at Stamford Bridge.
