Andrew Moran Talks About PNE’s Difficult Start
Andrew Moran Talks About PNE’s Difficult Start

Preston North End have endured the worst start to a league campaign since 1962, losing nine games, winning just once and drawing one.

Four points from eleven points and their most recent outing was a second match in a row where they conceded four times, losing 4-1 to Wrexham on Saturday afternoon, courtesy of Kieffer Moore, Sam Smith, Joe Worrall, and former captain Ben Whiteman.

Changing their manager has not had an effect as of yet, with Alexander struggling to get the best out of this squad which does bet the question whether this squad is actually the issue rather than the manager.

The biggest investment in the club’s history occurred this summer with the club smashing their transfer record to bring in Alfie Devine for £6m, a chunk of their nearly £20m spending spree, but more was definitely needed.

The quality of the squad has overall regressed since last season, Lewis Dobbin’s absence is really being felt in the attacking third which is evident in the lack of goals being scored by North End.

Andrew Moran joined the club in January from Brighton in a move that was seen as promising as the young Irish midfielder had championship experience and room to develop.

Speaking to CBS before the Wrexham clash, the 23-year old spoke about the difficult start of the season, “We’re just trying to stick together and be as positive as we can obviously, it’s been a bad start.

We’re the only ones who can turn it around, so just trying to work hard everyday just to try and get things going in the right direction.”

Nigel Reo-Coker asked about if the manager [Graham Alexander] has been saying anything or working on anything to get a second win on the board.

Moran responded, “I think it’s just mainly being together.

“The games come thick and fast, so one win can give you that momentum into the next, so we’re just looking to get that first win and just fire on from there.”

Troy Deeney spoke about the his experiences at Watford when it came to managerial changes, granted his was more extensive, but he was trying to gauge how the Irishman was feeling since Alexander took over from Paul Heckingbottom.

The Irish midfielder replied, “It’s not ideal, we had a good two week spell during the international break.

“I think that helped us because he’s got a bit of time to put his messages across and help use learn how he wants to play.

“Which we’re trying to get there fully a 100% to everything, all the small details that he wants.”

While the result wasn’t positive, it was refreshing to hear a player speak honestly about the situation and seem in a higher spirits before the game.

While the results are not going their way at the moment, it’s important that the towel isn’t thrown in, especially during such a difficult run against some mean clubs coming up.

There have been positive signs to take away from the defeats over the last month, something to build on and go forth to try and improve the situation.
