Maresca not concerned by Donnarumma’s recent mistakes

Enzo Maresca insists he has no concerns over Gianluigi Donnarumma's recent form, giving the goalkeeper his full backing ahead of their Premier League trip to Nottingham Forest.

Donnarumma was at fault for one of the goals City conceded in their 3-2 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday, as he was beaten at the near post by Ridle Baku.

Across all competitions this season, Donnarumma has made three errors leading to goals – with one of those coming against Aston Villa in a loss that ended City's perfect start to the Premier League campaign.

City have lost their last two league matches, slipping to second in the table behind Arsenal, but Maresca has no doubt that Donnarumma will get back to his best soon.

"It's not a concern, but it's a mistake," Maresca said when asked about Donnarumma.

"We recognise that; he knows that it's a mistake, but now it's Nottingham Forest away, we need to be focused on that."

Asked if he was thinking of reviewing the position during the international break, Maresca told a press conference: "I'm not, to be honest. Seriously, at the moment I'm not thinking about the international break and goalkeeper situation because we are talking about a mistake.

"A few minutes before the mistake, he has made a save that any keeper in the world is not going to do. So, it's always a balance.

"Gigio knows that the first goal was not good, but, again, he's going to do better."

Forest are struggling at the other end of the table, sitting in 19th coming into the weekend, with only one win to their name in the league so far (D3 L5).

Their winless streak stretched to five games after going down 2-0 to Brentford last time out, a result which prompted an impassioned rant from Oliver Glasner, who said the team needed to make changes.

He even went as far as to say, "If you don't want to follow, then I guess the sixth manager will come in", hinting at Forest's many changes in the dugout since the start of last season.

But Glasner believes that warning has had the desired impact on his players.

"I didn't attack anyone directly. We share that we want to be successful and win games. It was not a problem," he said.

"It was much louder outside than I felt it was inside. This is just how I see a relationship has to be. Let's talk about things if we don't like things.

"I can't blame somebody because if they don't know, how can you expect things to change?

"We are now in a society where criticism or the way I talk is negative, but the intention was positive and to change to get better results so that we can all have a better life."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Nottingham Forest – Morgan Gibbs-White

Morgan Gibbs-White could make his 200th Premier League appearance in this match.

Of the 199 so far, 151 have been for Nottingham Forest, the third-most for the club in the competition.

Manchester City – Elliot Anderson

Elliot Anderson has made more passes while under high pressure than any other player in the Premier League this season (357), and he will be determined to make an impact on his return to his former side.

MATCH PREDICTION: MANCHESTER CITY WIN

Forest have won one of their last nine Premier League games against City (D3 L5), a 1-0 home win in the 2024-25 season.

City, meanwhile, are looking to record consecutive away top-flight wins at Forest for the first time since January 1925.

The Citizens have lost their last two Premier League games, though, as many as they had in their previous 33 (W23 D8). Only once in the last 10 years have they lost more consecutively, losing four in a row in November/December 2024.

Having become the 10th team in English top-flight history to win each of their first seven games in a campaign, City have now lost their last two. Only Sheffield Wednesday in 1904-05 have won their first seven and then lost their next three.

But Forest are on a more worrying run. They are winless in their last six Premier League home games (D3 L3), failing to score in each of their last four.

Only twice have they had a longer run without a home league goal – six games between November 2011/January 2012 and five games between December 2017/February 2018.
