Former Los Angeles Clippers star Blake Griffin is carving out a nice second career for himself in the broadcast world. He can also routinely be found discussing the league on a wide range of podcasts.

Griffin recently joined Pablo Torre on an episode of “Pablo Torre Finds Out” to discuss his former team, along with his thoughts on some issues facing the league. One of those issues concerns how All-NBA honors are decided.

Blake Griffin Wants Change in All-NBA Voting

Torre brought up the reality of how much power media members hold in the NBA. For certain extension-eligible players, making All-NBA can increase the maximum salary they are eligible to receive. For some extension-eligible players, missing an All-NBA team can ultimately cost tens of millions of dollars in potential salary.

Griffin provided his clear thoughts on the matter.

“The beauty of it, I guess, is that there are people with votes who have a vast, vast NBA knowledge,” he began. “But I also think with that there are probably some that I don’t think should have that much control.”

Griffin’s take, as a former player, is intriguing because he saw the voting results firsthand. He was a three-time All-NBA Second Team member, earning Third Team honors twice as well. He did receive a handful of First-Team votes during his career but never seriously threatened the top two forward spots in the final voting.

“Just the distinction of being an All-NBA player, there’s 15 guys a year,” Griffin said. “That is a big deal. It’s very hard to make an All-NBA team, and I think that coming down to it being just whoever felt like ‘Oh, it’s this over this.’ You can always make an argument for some, but some there’s not an argument to me.”

Griffin notes that NBA media members wield significant power in this voting process. Unfortunately, the human element of it all could mean deserving players miss out on top honors due to favoritism or media members not following the game closely to determine the 15 All-NBA selections from the league’s eligible player pool.

The Clippers legend ended the topic by noting how even one or two votes going a player’s way can impact their trajectory in the NBA. That once again highlights the power voters hold.

Griffin is now a member of the media himself, giving him a nuanced take on this topic. Perhaps his comments will lead to a push for change in what has been a subjective process for years.
