I don’t have a dedicated sports channel or subscription to one because I will only watch a sporting event should I feel inclined to.
Many of us will know that sport these days is massive business with many sports stars’ contracts being worth millions every year.
I have a view on this which I’m sure many of you do as well but that’s perhaps a discussion for another time.
Many of us will also know from the news that a number of clubs and organisations from different sports have gone bust or have found themselves falling foul of the financial regulations put in place by their own sport’s regulatory bodies or indeed things like HMRC just because they have spent what they didn’t have in their efforts to be the best.
Just recently, Manchester City football club have found themselves in very serious trouble over the financial side of running the club and the ramifications and wider fallout could be mind-blowing all because they want to be the best at any cost.
Benjamin Franklin said: “Two passions have powerful influence on the affairs of men: the love of power and the love of money.”
Please hear this, we all need money to pay our bills, buy essentials for living such as food and for the occasional pleasure in life such as a meal out with family or friends.
What we should not do however is pursue money just for money’s sake.
The Bible has a great deal to say about money.
Hebrews 13 and verse 5 says: “Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be satisfied with what you have.
For God has said, ‘I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.’” (GNB).
Also in 1 Timothy 6 and verse 9 we read: “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.”
It is not wrong to have money however, if we are to pursue anything, the Bible tells us it is God.
Matthew 6 verse 33 says: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be given to you.”
Will we do that today?
