Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers remain undefeated after picking up their sixth straight victory over the Washington Commanders on Monday, Oct. 19.
Earlier in San Francisco's 23-17 win over Washington, the former Iowa State quarterback became the NFL's all-time leader in career passer rating with 1,500 attempts. Purdy went 5-for-6 for 51 yards on the opening drive, capping the possession with an 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end George Kittle and pushing his career passer rating to 105.7.
He finished the game with a 105.5 passer rating after going 21-of-29 passing for 264 yards and one touchdown. He also added five carries for 28 yards. Purdy now ranks ahead of active NFL quarterbacks such as Lamar Jackson, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes.
Passer rating is the league's official statistic for ranking passers and dates back to the 1970s. It combines quarterback metrics including completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdown percentage and interception percentage.
The stat has been criticized for not accounting for other aspects of quarterback play, such as rushing, taking sacks and committing penalties, leading to the development of newer metrics like ESPN's Total QBR and expected points added.
Even in Total QBR, which measures nearly every part of a quarterback's performance, Purdy ranks No. 1 with a score of 83.
"Being around [Purdy] has made me take my focus to the next level," 49ers wide receiver Jordan Watkins told The Athletic. "He's one of those guys who always has a chip on his shoulder, and he wants to be as perfect as possible so that way he can go out there and, you know, shut the doubters up."
The 26-year-old currently has the second-best odds of winning the NFL MVP behind Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. Purdy has totaled 1,616 yards and 15 touchdowns with two interceptions this season.
In his five-year career, Purdy has completed 68% of his passes for 13,145 yards with 98 touchdowns and 39 interceptions.
The 49ers' next game is Sunday, Oct. 25 against the Atlanta Falcons at 12 p.m. CT on FOX or stream with Fubo.
