Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green said he wants to retire with the franchise but plans to keep playing next season even if that means joining another team. Green signed a one-year, $27.7 million deal with Golden State in July. If the Warriors had successfully signed LeBron James, Green was expected to sign a multi-year deal with the franchise at a lower annual average.
The four-time champion told CNBC Sport he is approaching this season as if it could be his last with the Warriors. Golden State drafted Green in the second round in 2012, and he has spent his entire 14-year career there.
"I would love to retire a Golden State Warrior," said Green. "However, I'm also not Steph Curry, right? So I don't have every luxury that Steph Curry has, and that's okay. It's such a rare thing to be on one team your entire career. And if I can accomplish that feat, I would love to."
Curry signed a two-year, $116 million extension in September that runs through 2028-29.
Green said he would not hold any ill feelings toward the Warriors if they move on and understands business factors will affect the decision.
"I would love to play basketball next year...if that's not here, I'm not going to retire," said Green.
The 2017 Defensive Player of the Year averaged 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists last season. Golden State went 37-45 and lost in the second game of the play-in.
Steve Kerr has changed the offense to play faster and space the floor differently. Green is being asked to run the floor instead of trailing the play.
"I don't know how many years I have left in the NBA, let alone at this place," said Green. "For me, it's all about enjoying what's in front of us."
