Unbeaten UK Fighter Interested In Usyk Fight Ahead Of Cruiserweight Return: “Now We’re Talking”
Unbeaten UK Fighter Interested In Usyk Fight Ahead Of Cruiserweight Return: “Now We’re Talking”

Oleksandr Usyk remains one of the biggest draws in boxing for as long as he is still an active fighter.

The likelihood is that Usyk has only one fight left. He has been unbeaten in his career so far and hasn’t ever even been put down legitimately.

He has twice beaten Anthony Joshua, Daniel Dubois and Tyson Fury and is the only man in history to be a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion, as well as also having been undisputed down a cruiserweight first.

Although Usyk had talked about the possibility of fighting Deontay Wilder, he now looks set to go back down to cruiserweight to take on current unified champion David Benavidez, and that has gained the interest of an unbeaten UK fighter.

Speaking to Sky Sports Boxing, Viddal Riley admitted he would love the challenge.

“That would be crazy. I’d be gassed though. Those are the sort of things that get me excited. That would be mad. Now we’re talking.

“One thing history has shown, though, is that anyone who goes up and comes back down, they’re not the same. It’s been a long time, combined with ageing, combined with tough fights, people always think that if you win by a landslide it weren’t tough.

“That’s the biggest misconception in boxing. To defeat AJ twice, to defeat Fury twice, these things will take a toll on him.”

It’s fair to say Usyk’s best years must be behind him, given he is now in his mid-30s and a veteran of plenty of hard fights. Last time out, he showed some vulnerabilities fighting kickboxing world champion and boxing novice Rico Verhoeven, although after a slow start he eventually got the job done with a late knockout win.

Riley has won all 14 of his contests so far, including Chev Clarke and, last time out, securing a points win over Mateusz Masternak in April.
