Rangers fans have been plunged into a fierce debate following reports that former Ibrox favourite Mikey Moore is enduring a nightmare loan spell at German side FC Koln.

The 19-year-old winger established himself as an instant crowd favourite at Rangers last season, registering seven goals and four assists across 47 appearances during a highly successful loan spell from Tottenham Hotspur.

Rangers were keen to secure the England youth international for a second season, but both Tottenham and Moore favoured testing his talents in one of Europe’s top five leagues, leading to his summer switch to the Bundesliga. However, the move has quickly turned sour.

Mikey Moore’s loan spell at FC Koln described as a ‘real mess’

Prominent German tabloid newspaper Bild has described Moore’s temporary transfer to Koln as a “real mess” after a difficult start to the campaign.

Despite high expectations and sporting director Thomas Kessler breaking internal club rules to sign him on a straight one-year loan without an option to buy, Moore has struggled to make an impact. The teenager has failed to record a single goal or direct assist in his seven Bundesliga appearances, recently dropping to the bench for matches against Eintracht Frankfurt and Union Berlin.

Koln head coach Rene Wagner publicly admitted his frustration prior to the Union Berlin fixture, stating that an assist or goal from the Tottenham loanee remained on his “personal bingo card.”

Rangers fans are split on January rescue mission for Moore

These reports have led to a fierce debate among the Rangers faithful, with many floating the idea of the Light Blues enquiring about cutting the youngster’s loan short in January and bringing him back to Ibrox. It is safe to say that supporters have voiced wildly contrasting opinions on X (formerly Twitter).

One faction of supporters believes bringing the attacker back to Ibrox would solve several tactical issues while reuniting him with a fanbase that adores him. One fan wrote:

Spurs should recall him in January, and send him up the road to us. Moore on the left, Minsu [Kim] as the 10 and [Badredine Bouanani] Bouanani on the right would be absolutely tremendous viewing, three really exciting players. We love Moore and he loves us.. it just makes sense!

Another supporter believes Moore made a mistake joining Koln at this stage in his career, writing:

Wrong club at the wrong time. The simple option was back to Rangers, not just for a selfish point of view, but he found a place in the team, he found a connection with the club and fans and was playing in bigger games!

One fan simply wrote:

Bring him home.

However, another section of the Rangers support firmly believes the club should close the door on short-term Premier League loans and focus on developing their own talent.

One fan claimed that Derek McInnes‘ side do not have the financial means to buy Moore, who Tottenham rejected bids worth up to £26million in the summer, while pointing out that the Gers already have four loan players in their ranks:

Far too many loan players at Rangers. We have no chance of topping the £26m Tottenham rejected and decided to send him to Germany on a loan with no option to buy. We’re building something of our own at Rangers. Move on.

Another supporter suggested that Moore was overrated at Rangers, writing:

He is not our player, but this is on him. He was way over hyped when he played for us. I was glad he never came back and he should be shining in that league.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, all eyes will remain on North London and Koln to see whether Tottenham act on the winger’s lack of minutes.

However, that does not necessarily mean Rangers must explore another move for Moore. While Rangers News recently pointed out how the lack of output from Minsu Kim and Djeidi Gassama is holding McInnes’ side back, we do not think another rejigging of the squad is necessary.

Furthermore, Moore not having loads of goals and assists to his name does not mean he has been performing poorly. Last month, the Tottenham loanee shone in a 2-1 derby victory over Borussia Monchengladbach, with his former Rangers teammates rallying behind him on Instagram.
