Liverpool: Second source confirms Reds want Brighton ace in mammoth transfer

Two separate sources have confirmed Liverpool are giving early consideration to signing a Brighton ace, though any such deal looks fraught with problems.

Overnight, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano delivered an eye-opening verdict on what the future holds for Alisson Becker.

Taking to YouTube, he revealed the expectation right now is the iconic goalkeeper will leave Liverpool when his contract expires next summer.

“I think it’s a serious possibility,” said Romano. “Then it’s not something 100 percent decided, but it’s a serious possibility because there is interest from several countries and Alisson could explore these opportunities.

“Then let’s see how the season will end. It’s still very early. Maybe Liverpool decide to tell Alisson, no, we absolutely want you to stay here and they offer a new contract.

“So let’s see what’s going to happen. But I also can tell you that Liverpool also very happy with [Giorgi] Mamardashvili.”

Romano stressed Liverpool are “very happy” with current No 2, Mamardashvili, thus hinting the giant Georgian would be promoted to starter if Alisson does depart.

However, that’s not a view shared by other sources, including our colleagues over on TEAMtalk.

Earlier this week, their insider, Graeme Bailey, noted the Reds are NOT fully convinced Mamardashvili has what it takes to be Alisson’s heir.

Accordingly, Aston Villa’s ultra-impressive Zion Suzuki is being tracked in the event Alisson leaves and Mamardashvili is not entrusted with the vacancy in goal.

Now, a separate report from Flashscore and their journalist, Dean Jones, has confirmed Liverpool do indeed harbour doubts over Mamardashvili.

They stated: ‘There are doubts over whether Giorgi Mamardashvili is ready to take over as Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper.’

And with Flashscore also confirming Alisson may well leave Liverpool at season’s end, a new No 1 is in the club’s thinking.

Liverpool targeting Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen

Football Insider recently claimed Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen is on Liverpool’s radar, and the new update from Flashscore stated similar.

The outlet noted: ‘Bart Verbruggen is emerging as a goalkeeper of interest to Liverpool as they start to consider life beyond Alisson.

‘The Brighton goalkeeper has emerged as a potential target amid growing uncertainty over the future of Alisson, who could be in his final campaign at Anfield.’

But while Liverpool’s interest in the 24-year-old Netherlands starter is genuine, a transfer looks difficult to make.

The report stressed Brighton will command top dollar for Verbruggen and will drive a hard bargain.

Furthermore, Brighton look on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League. Prior to Sunday’s matches, the Seagulls sit third in the table – three places ahead of Liverpool – and boast by far the league’s best goal difference (+17).

A first ever campaign in the Champions League would strengthen the club’s resolve to retain their best players. Furthermore, their best players, of which Verbruggen is one, might be more inclined to stick around for an extra season.
